Senior Database Developer

Location: Toronto (Hybrid – 2 days onsite per week)
Position Summary
Our client, located in Toronto, is seeking a Senior Database Developer to lead the ongoing development, optimization, and maintenance of a robust relational database environment that supports organizational operations and strategic initiatives.
This hands-on role combines technical excellence, leadership, and process improvement to ensure data integrity, system reliability, and high performance across enterprise applications.

Key Responsibilities

Database Development & Integration

  • Design, build, and maintain database solutions that enhance operational efficiency and align with strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with the Data Architect and operational teams to define requirements, develop specifications, and implement database functionality.
  • Test updates and integrations to ensure compatibility across systems (e.g., R:BASE, MS Office).
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation, including user guides and version histories.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to staff, promoting best practices in data management and software testing.

Database Management & Optimization

  • Monitor and improve database performance, reliability, and data integrity.
  • Anticipate and resolve system issues through proactive diagnostics and long-term solutions.
  • Develop and maintain backup, recovery, and security protocols.
  • Establish standards for data quality, coding, and change control.
  • Mentor junior developers to ensure adherence to development standards and effective maintenance practices.

Collaboration & Support

  • Partner with IT and operations leaders to ensure seamless data flow and system integration.
  • Contribute to process design and implementation to improve staff usability and efficiency.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to resolve data and system issues promptly.
  • Support cross-functional IT initiatives and organizational technology projects.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • SQL certification and strong proficiency in relational database design, administration, and optimization.
  • Minimum 6–8 years of progressive IT experience, including 3+ years in SQL database administration and 3+ years in software or system development.
  • Experience with R:BASE, Access, or similar relational databases.
  • Proficiency in Windows environments, MS Office, and documentation/reporting tools.
  • 2–4 years of project management and team supervision experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Strong understanding of database security, performance tuning, and backup/recovery procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.
