Job Purpose This role calls for an emerging technical leader and subject‑matter expert with strong experience in traditional machine‑learning algorithms and deep knowledge of state‑of‑the‑art AI/GenAI methods used in search engines. The Lead Data Scientist, Search will influence enterprise technical strategies across machine learning, AI, frontend, search engineering, DSP, and backend data systems, partnering with product, business, and engineering leads to design and scale search systems for the future.
Responsibilities
Lead design and implementation
of advanced algorithms that improve multi‑modal search performance, including embeddings, graph learning, deep learning and large language models (LLMs).
Develop and optimize ranking algorithms
that go beyond keyword matching to consider content quality, user experience, and site‑level factors.
Build search personalization
algorithms that learn from user behavior and preferences to deliver tailored search results.
Collaborate on data systems
to build robust pipelines for collecting, transforming, and managing massive datasets required for efficient search operations.
Design search architecture
and optimize infrastructure in partnership with software engineers and architects.
Monitor and optimize performance
by developing tools and processes that detect anomalies, ensure data quality, and address technical issues.
Run experimentation and A/B testing
with analytics teams to evaluate search performance and validate hypotheses about algorithm impact.
Research emerging technologies
to incorporate advances in AI, ML, and search into the system.
Mentor junior scientists and ML engineers
and build a deep technical community focused on improving search experiences.
Work collaboratively across functions to deliver scalable, robust technical solutions.
Job Requirements
6+ years of experience with at least 2‑3 years of leading technical projects.
Experience with search systems such as Elastic or SOLR and deep understanding of their infrastructure.
Experience leading multiple projects simultaneously, responsible for delivery and business metrics.
Experience in API engineering, including design, development, and maintenance.
Extensive experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenAI, and LangChain.
Expert-level Python and other common programming languages.
Proficiency in big data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, and distributed systems.
Experience in Agile environments and familiarity with project tools (Azure DevOps, Jira, etc.).
Previous mentoring, training, and developing junior team members.
Knowledge of software engineering principles as they apply to ML systems.
Ability to present results to senior and executive leadership on strategic decisions.
Deep understanding of state‑of‑the‑art ML models in search, with a bonus for experience in multi‑modal systems.
Collaborative, problem‑solving, growth mindset with a focus on delivery.
Qualifications
Education : Master’s Degree or equivalent in quantitative fields such as computer science, engineering, physics, or mathematics.
General Experience : 6‑10 years of comprehensive work experience in the relevant domain.
Benefits Targeted Pay Range: $95,200.00 – $158,800.00. Salary is part of a competitive total rewards package that may include incentive, equity, and benefits.
