General Purpose: The area supervisor is a member of the store leadership that is responsible for an assigned specific area of the store, as well as general store operations and supervision when functioning as shift manager. Area supervisors are responsible for opening and closing the store, supervising associates and maintaining a friendly environment where it is easy to shop. They ensure proper merchandise presentation and maintain a clean work area at all times. Area supervisors are also responsible for executing and supervising the companys operational processes as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Safe and secure environments:
- Understands that safety is the number one priority and practices safe behaviors in all that they do.
- Maintains a high level of awareness on the sales floor to create a safe shopping environment for everyone. Corrects or reports any unsafe conditions or practices immediately to store leadership.
- Is in charge of building security, including control of entry/exit (associate entry/exit, receiving door, daily trash removal, etc.), daily verification of the function of electronic article surveillance (EAS) devices, cash office security, armored carrier pickups, and cash register area.
- Eliminates clutter and ensures a safe and clear exit to emergency exits.
- Is in charge of customer safety, such as accident prevention, accident reporting, and emergency procedures.
- Tests all fire alarm systems as scheduled. Responds to off-hours alarms when requested.
- Customer service:
- Treats all customers, associates, and other leaders with respect.
- Demonstrates courtesy, kindness, and professionalism at all times. Recognizes associates through the use of company recognition programs.
- Store and personal brand:
- Represents and supports the companys brand at all times.
- Maintains a professional appearance, in accordance with the companys dress code. Ensures that all associates comply with the companys dress code at all times.
- Maintains all areas of the store clean, well-kept, and merchandised to standard.
- Is responsible for daily waste collection.
- General merchandising:
- Ensures that markdowns, consignments, and clearances are completed to company standards through teaching, task assignment, and follow-up according to company best practices.
- Is in charge of receiving the merchandise truck when needed.
- Processes all merchandise with a sense of urgency.
- Is responsible for receiving all non-merchandise incoming deliveries (i.e., signs, supplies, special deliveries, etc.).
- Controls the cleanliness and organization of all warehouses.
- Helps deliver and place merchandise on the sales floor when all merchandise is processed.
- Is responsible for ensuring that any reservations are secured and processed according to company policy.
- Is in charge of department merchandising, including backup inventory.
- Controls shrinkage due to damage.
- Ensures compliance with monthly presentation guidelines in the assigned area.
- Is responsible for floor movements and signage, including promotional signage, as needed.
- Has control of new wrap as needed.
- Loss prevention:
- Understands and complies with the loss prevention awareness program and is responsible for loss prevention in the store, which includes maintaining a great customer service presence on the sales floor, customer and associate engagement, and greater awareness of loss prevention.
- As a representative of Ross leadership, demonstrates integrity and honesty in all interactions with associates and customers. Protects confidential information, cash, credit card information, and merchandise.
- Ensures that the public view monitor (PVM) system is maintained properly.
- Performs associate bag checks (Code 50).
- Executes all company best practices and maximizes productivity by minimizing steps and touches while working.
- Customer service supervision and operations:

- Maintains pace, energy, and presence in customer service and manages the line to speed up customer wait time.
- Trains and orients associates on cash registers, control of shortages policies, and other customer service procedures. This is done with the goal of meeting cordiality and productivity standards.
- Controls the break schedule of retail associates for backups, lunches, and breaks.
- Ensures that all equipment is functioning properly.
- Maintains adequate supplies and recovery for the customer service area.
- Ensures that returns are quick, scanned correctly, have the security tag, and are issued with a ticket.
- Teaches all associates the best practice of scan and bag.
- Ensures the ability to sell merchandise in customer service, aisle tables, 4-way features for men/women, and special shelving.
- Fitting rooms:
- Is in charge of fitting room maintenance and cleaning.
- Ensures that all fitting room garment tags are audited and accounted for according to company policy.
- Ensures compliance with return throughout the day. All merchandise returned to the sales floor must have a ticket, be scanned, marked, and have the security tag as needed.
- Administrative duties assigned by the store manager:
- Ensures that cash withdrawals and bank deposits are performed according to company policy.
- Is in charge of customer service control when needed. Understands and complies with policies and procedures that pertain to refund approval, associate purchase approval, obtaining cash registers and cash from the safe, money log in/out, cancellation of approval, log media, and break schedules.
- Takes responsibility for payroll administration, including daily time edits, compliance with associate scheduling, Sunday payroll transmission, and payroll reports, as needed.

- Previous experience in customer service and supervision is preferred.
- Must know point-of-sale equipment and applications.
- Must be able to perform basic math calculations commonly used in retail environments.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends.
