Job Description:

Role Synopsis

The Lead Geologist individual contributor role is part of the Subsurface Technology Team (STT) within bpx energy. The STT is a centralized center of technical excellence made up of geoscience and reservoir engineering experts who support bpx energy’s multi-rig program across the Permian, Eagle Ford, and Haynesville development teams. The purpose of the Geoscience team in STT is to drive technical excellence, pursue and adopt innovation, optimize subsurface workflows, and solve the toughest technical problems. We do all this through a commercial lens.

Key Accountabilities

The main responsibility of the Lead Geologist individual contributor in the STT is to drive subsurface excellence as part of bpx energy’s center of subject matter expertise. It is expected of the professional filling this role to exercise independent judgement in developing, distributing, and overseeing geology products of the highest technical standards & quality.

Such geology products inform reservoir, drilling, completions, and business development; and are aimed at identifying fairways, mitigating geo-hazards & uncertainty, maximizing reserves, and minimizing cost. Specific accountabilities include:

  • Deliver technical projects – solicited from the assets or self-initiated – underpinning increased safety, production, or cost savings by solving the assets’ challenges on well performance, drilling, and completions. The working capacity on such technical projects can be hands-on, support, or project leader. Cross-discipline collaboration is expected.
  • Perform subsurface due diligence – solicited from business development or self-initiated – underpinning value creation to bpx energy portfolio through Merger, Acquisition, or Divestiture opportunities – bolt-on or at large.
  • Embrace the team’s project management process 1) project kick-off – alignment on scope, deliverables, and responsibilities; 2) project execution – alignment on direction; 3) project closure – effectively communicating findings, added value, and assumptions; and 4) project feedback – gathering input for future improvement.
  • Embrace the team’s high-performance deeds required to effectively build trust and manage stakeholders: 1) reliability – consistently dependable; 2) ownership – personal investment, initiative, and accountability; and 3) alignment – prioritization, shared understanding, and unified direction. Key stakeholders include peers and leadership in the STT, business development, and asset teams.
  • Develop and maintain up to date geology products for the three bpx energy assets – Permian, Eagle Ford, and Haynesville – such as petroleum system models, stratigraphic interpretations, and subsurface property maps. This includes integrating petrophysical and geophysical evaluations.
  • Elevate the assets’ technical knowledge base, standards, and capabilities. This includes standardizing, maintaining, and optimizing subsurface processes; assuring or peer reviewing technical work; offering and hosting one-on-one mentoring sessions; advising on technical work; offering and leading technical development opportunities.
  • Pursue and actualize innovative proposals in the geology domain. This includes exploring, incubating, and developing new technologies & technical workflows; engaging with third-party service providers and other operators; and attending fit-for-purpose technical conferences and consortia meetings.
  • Visit the field to support technical projects such as overseeing specialty data acquisition programs.
Essential Experience and Education
  • Master of Science in Geology, Geoscience or related fields as it pertains to the job description
  • Personal commitment to inclusion, respect, transparency, ownership, safety, ethics, and compliance.
  • Minimum of 15 years of industry experience working as a Geologist in U.S. unconventional plays.
  • Breadth of expertise in unconventional petroleum geology; sedimentology & stratigraphy; applied petrophysics; subsurface due diligence for business development evaluations; and subsurface based well performance evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to address technical challenges through the lens of business outcomes such as IRR and NPV.
  • A track record of cross-discipline collaboration and integration in technical problem solving.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in fast-paced and lean work environments via initiative, learning & adapting quickly.
  • Proven abilities in exercising independent judgment, rationalizing through problem solving, and dealing with unstructured & uncertain situations.
  • Geoscience software (Petrel preferred)
Desirable Experience
  • Eagle Ford, Permian, and Haynesville experience preferred though not required
  • Training or hands-on experience in data visualization software (Power BI or Spotfire preferred)
  • Training or hands-on experience with competitor data web applications (Enverus preferred)
  • Training or hands-on experience in data analytics, e.g., multi-variate regression

How much do we pay (Base) $213,000-$250,000. Note that the pay range listed for this position is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
