Job Overview Canonical is hiring an
Engineering Manager, MAAS
to lead the Metal as a Service (MAAS) team. MAAS is a rapidly evolving software stack written in Python and Go that provides private bare‑metal infrastructure with a cloud‑style on‑demand API. The role will drive engineering excellence, technical strategy, and team growth for one of Canonical’s flagship data‑center products.
Responsibilities
Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone and manage remote collaboration
Coach, mentor, and develop team members through career planning and performance feedback
Own the engineering execution of MAAS features, from low‑level hardware provisioning to the web interface, CLI, and API
Advocate modern software development practices, participating in code and architectural reviews
Engage with cross‑functional teams such as cloud‑init, LXD, and Canonical’s public cloud offerings
Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Proven experience delivering software with Python, Golang, or similar languages
Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
Strong understanding of modern Linux cloud‑computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes
Technical aptitude for distributed systems and complex system design
Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
Experience with agile software development methodologies
Strong leadership and people‑management skills with a track record of building high‑performance teams
Ability to travel internationally up to two weeks per year for company events
Location This is a work‑from‑anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.
