Under the direction of a Special Education Coordinator, a School Site Administrator and a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), this position will provide a direct service to students eligible for speech and language services. Incumbent performs related work as required.

Assists in the treatment of students, including phonology, fluency, language processing, verbal expression, augmentative and alternative communications, and hearing impairment

Follows documented Individual Education Plans (IEP) developed by the supervising SLP

Documents student performance (e.g., tallying data, preparing charts, records, and graphs)

Assists with clerical duties such as preparing materials and scheduling activities as directed by the SLP

Works effectively with fellow staff members

Ability to appropriately handle stress and interact with others, including supervisors, coworkers, teachers and community. Regular and consistent punctuality and attendance are essential functions of the job.

Assist students with daily assigned activities.

Assists in supervision of students in halls, cafeteria, and playground.

Administer first aid and/or CPR as necessary.

Knowledge of: Methods of interventions used by Speech-Language Pathologists; Writing and interpreting an IEP; Communication development; files and records management, office procedures Operating various office equipment; operating and maintaining audio-visual equipment.

Skills: Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; Working effectively with students in classroom, small group, and individual sessions; effective behavior management strategies; Relating to school personnel and parents in a cooperative manner Follow directions regarding Speech-Language Pathology assessments and interventions.

Ability to: Work effectively with hearing-impaired students. Interpret and apply oral and written instructions. Perform several tasks and determine priorities. Deal with unusual behavior and crisis situations. Learn and apply school rules, regulations, and procedures. Complete routine records. Recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods. Transport students to and from other attendance areas for specialized programs. Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. Willingness to attend trainings as it relates to implementation of IEPs.

Preferred Certifications and Licenses: Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate from either the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or other similar organization. Certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid certification as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant from the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association; CPR Certification required.

Experience and Training: Must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following requirements: (a) completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or (b) obtained an associated degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or (c) possess a Nevada Paraprofessional Certification

Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Sedentary to heavy exertion of force involving 10-25 pounds frequently with up to 100 pounds occasionally. May involve negligible up to significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry. Physical Demands: May involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking and hearing, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Involves hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity and depth perception; occasional far acuity. Vision to read printed materials, VDT screens, or other monitoring devices. Working Conditions: Work is performed under the following conditions. Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods. Hazards: Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment). BloodBorne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work, you will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided annually.
