JOB SUMMARY
The Lab Technologist - Transfusion Services performs complex clinical laboratory testing in the Blood Bank using both automated and manual methods to support safe and effective transfusion practices. This role is responsible for blood typing, antibody detection and identification, compatibility testing, and preparation and issuance of blood components.
Using independent judgment, the technologist investigates serologic discrepancies, resolves complex immunohematology problems, and ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. This position requires strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to function effectively in high-acuity and emergency situations with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs blood bank testing including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening/identification, compatibility testing, and advanced serologic procedures
Investigates transfusion reactions, resolves serologic discrepancies, and supports emergency release procedures according to policy
Receives, stores, prepares, modifies, and issues blood components while maintaining inventory and regulatory compliance
Performs quality control, instrument maintenance, proficiency testing, and supports validation of new methods and equipment
Ensures patient safety through proper identification, specimen labeling, discrepancy investigation, and communication of critical results
Utilizes laboratory and hospital information systems to document, report, and troubleshoot testing and operational issues
Trains and mentors staff, supports competency assessments, and participates in inspections, audits, and CAP readiness activities
Collaborates with physicians, nurses, blood suppliers, and other departments to support safe and effective patient care
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of Bachelor's degree required, or its equivalent required in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or related field.
Licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of Florida in all five specialty areas is required for positions in General Laboratory at all locations.
Internal applicants selected for this position must be licensed as a technologist in the State of Florida within 3 months of date of transfer.
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in transfusion services or blood bank preferred
Demonstrated competency in complex serologic testing and problem resolution
