Job Summary The Principal Application Architect serves as a strategic leader within the Enterprise Architecture Center of Excellence, responsible for shaping the application technology landscape across Sanford Healthcare. Acting as a trusted advisor, the architect partners with stakeholders, application teams, and technical teams to deliver robust, future‑ready application architectures that support organizational growth and transformation. The principal architect leads transformational opportunities through the strategic adoption of application technologies across the enterprise, identifies critical business capabilities, and ensures alignment with evolving business and information systems requirements.
The architect designs and oversees the implementation of enterprise‑level application solutions that align with business objectives and adhere to technical standards. The architect ensures systems are scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable, guiding development teams in applying architectural best practices. Collaboration with stakeholders and technology leaders as a trusted advisor evaluates and recommends tools, frameworks, and platforms that address current and future business needs. Working closely with Infrastructure, Cloud, and Security Architects, the architect ensures seamless integration of application solutions with underlying infrastructure and cloud environments, maintaining compliance with organizational security standards.
Application technology reviews for fitness to purpose and the definition of iterative paths toward strategic architecture goals are performed. High‑level plans to bridge gaps between current and target states, aligning with IT budgeting and capital planning cycles, are developed. System performance is analyzed and improvements implemented to enhance scalability, reliability, and overall efficiency.
The role requires collaboration with leaders at all levels across the organization, working with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders to clarify and discover requirements. The principal architect partners with Application Owners and end‑users to define business requirements for complex systems, leading to the engagement of technical engineers. Collaboration within Architecture and across IT disciplines to identify, establish, and maintain principles, policies, and technical standards is essential. The architect will author, publish, and socialize these principles, policies, and standards as assigned.
