*Job Title*: Veterinarian
*Reports to: *Director of Veterinary Medicine
*Summary: *The function of this position is to perform spay and neuter procedures for shelter, adopted , owned and feral animals that HSOY schedules into the clinic. Assist with developing and implementing standards of animal medical care and to coordinate and direct treatments for animals in the care of the Humane Society of Yuma. The work typically is performed under general direction of the Director of Veterinary Medicine and the Executive Director, with administrative assistance provided by the Spay/Neuter Clinic Manager.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
· Perform surgical sterilization for animals that are released from the shelter through rescue, adoption, low-cost owned services and return to owner.
· Participate in all off-site vaccination clinics as needed.
· Participate in low-cost basic medical clinics for the community as needed and requested.
· Ensure that all procedures are done in a humane manner at all times and stays abreast of new trends towards humane treatment within animal shelter low-cost spay/neuter clinics.
· Provide direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals brought to the shelter; ensures that the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals' conditions are recorded.
· Work with clinic manager to ensure staff is abiding by clinic policies and procedures, set by HSOY at all times, to include, medical, drug and client record keeping.
· With the Clinic Manager, ensures that all state and federal laws, state regulations, accepted standards, and HSOY policies and procedures regarding clinic operations, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling are adhered to.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures and companion animal health issues.
· Assists with educating entire HSOY staff on medical issues that affect animal shelters and teach the
philosophy of “Herd Health” within the shelter environment.
· Work with local Veterinarians who step in on medical cases, to include cruelty cases, which require
medical treatment outside of HSOY’s ability.
· Assist shelter staff in providing solutions to disease outbreaks within the shelter setting.
· Provide medical care to fostered animals that are being fostered by volunteers at HSOY.
· Provide input when euthanasia decisions are to be made on medical cases.
· Build effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with the community, volunteers and staff.
· Perform other medical services as needed for animals in shelter, fostered animals or staff animals when requested or required for humane care.
· Be available by phone, after hours, to clinic staff when emergencies arise from animals that were
recently altered in HSOY’s clinic.
· Report to shelter, as needed, when afterhours emergencies, from previous HSOY surgeries or foster’s, require the assistance of HSOY’s Veterinarian.
Qualifications:
· Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from accredited college.
· Current Veterinary License within the State of Arizona.
· Minimum of 1 year animal shelter experience preferred.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Excellent written and oral communications skills.
· Superior knowledge of medical animal care.
· Ability to work with many different types of people to promote HSOY in the best possible manner.
· Flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.
· Ability to be forward thinking and encourage, self, and others, to promote, and become knowledgeable about changes in industry standards while also ensuring HSOY is on the leading edge of shelter standards of medical care.
Physical Demands and Abilities:
· Frequently required to stand, sit, walk, run, jump, bend, twist, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.
· Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
· Ability to work in varying temperatures and climate change
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. Exposure to animal diseases and in the presence of injured, vicious, or frightened animals and potentially volatile situations which can present risk of violence or injury. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $105,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
