The Role:
The Director, Surgical Services RN serves in a dual role as Operations Director and Nursing Director for Surgical Services at PAMC, overseeing the Pre‑Op Clinic, Ambulatory Surgery Unit, Pain Clinic, Operating Room, Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing Department.
PAMC is a 401‑bed hospital with 17 operating rooms, including a hybrid OR, robotics, and open‑heart surgery capabilities. Working within the strategic direction of Providence Health & Services (PH&S), this role formulates strategy, implements strategic plans, and ensures attainment of operating goals aligned with organizational policies and objectives.
The Director is accountable for the operational, financial, clinical, and business effectiveness of Surgical Services and for leading patient care areas that contribute to safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient‑ and family‑centered care. Achieving and sustaining a Magnet culture is a priority. This role exercises independent judgment and carries overall accountability for clinical and operational performance while advancing Providence’s mission, philosophy, core values, and vision.
This leader promotes accountability for nursing practice, autonomy and control of practice, open communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence‑based practice, workforce well‑being, stewardship of resources, and care that meets the needs of healthcare consumers.
What You'll Do:
Operational & Clinical Leadership
- Evaluate organizational structure, reporting relationships, and leadership roles to ensure high standards of safety, effectiveness, cost control, and clinical practice.
- Utilize staffing management principles to ensure adequate workforce supply, anticipate seasonal fluctuations, and respond to market driven volume changes.
- Monitor departmental, service, and program performance using operational and financial tools, specialty databases, and quality metrics.
Financial Stewardship & Strategic Planning
- Develop, implement, and manage the annual operating budget in alignment with hospital strategic goals.
- Demonstrate stewardship of financial resources through cost control initiatives, budget monitoring, and timely corrective action.
- Tie departmental budgeting directly to strategic planning efforts.
Physician Partnership & Service Development
- Collaborate with the OR Medical Director and physician leadership to design, expand, and refine Surgical Services across the continuum of care.
- Provide oversight for facility renovations and improvements impacting Surgical Services.
- Represent Surgical Services across hospital, regional, and external committees.
Quality, Safety & Magnet Culture
- Provide visionary leadership that anticipates and influences change in professional nursing practice.
- Lead and participate in quality improvement, patient safety, environment of care, and regulatory readiness initiatives.
- Actively support and advance a Magnet culture with the goal of attaining and sustaining Magnet recognition.
- Integrate evidence based protocols and research findings into clinical practice.
People Leadership & Workforce Development
- Establish systems that enable shared governance and nursing autonomy over professional practice.
- Select, develop, evaluate, and promote leaders; support succession planning and professional development.
- Ensure timely performance evaluations, clear expectations, coaching, and constructive feedback.
- Foster a work environment that achieves high staff satisfaction, retention, and engagement.
Communication, Collaboration & Governance
- Collaborate with staff, providers, leadership, patients, and families to promote optimal care and service excellence.
- Maintain strong internal and external relationships across the Providence system and broader healthcare community.
- Lead and participate in hospital, regional, statewide, and national committees as appropriate.
- Serve as the Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) designee as assigned and potentially rotate as Administrator on Call (AOC).
What You'll Bring:
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school
- Master’s Degree (preferred)
- Alaska Registered Nurse License (required upon hire)
Experience
- 5+ years of healthcare operations and leadership experience, including service line growth
- Experience in strategic planning, organizational assessment, and complex hospital operations
- Demonstrated executive, analytical, and administrative capability in managing acute care services
Leadership & Professional Capabilities
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence across disciplines
- Proven ability to manage clinical, operational, and financial performance
- Experience leading change, quality improvement, and Magnet aligned professional practice
- Ability to operate with initiative, resourcefulness, and sound judgment in a complex environment

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.
