Position Overview
The AMI Program Project Manager will lead the planning, execution, and delivery of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment activities within targeted operating areas in Florida. This position owns day-to-day project management accountability for schedule, budget, scope, quality, and stakeholder engagement, reporting to the AMI Program Manager. The Project Manager will direct field crews, contractors, and vendors; serve as the primary point of contact for the client on assigned projects; and ensure AMI meter and network equipment deployments are executed safely, on time, and in full compliance with utility standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate brings proven utility project management experience, strong leadership presence, and the ability to operate independently across a geographically distributed portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
* Lead end-to-end project management for AMI meter exchange, network deployment, and related modernization workstreams across an assigned Florida operating area.
* Develop, maintain, and manage integrated project plans, schedules, budgets, and resource forecasts using industry-standard tools.
* Translate program-level objectives into tactical project plans with clearly defined milestones, deliverables, and acceptance criteria.
* Drive execution to plan, proactively identifying variances and implementing corrective actions to protect schedule and cost commitments.
Field, Contractor & Vendor Management
* Oversee contractor mobilization, daily production tracking, and performance against agreed KPIs; escalate and resolve performance issues.
* Manage material procurement, staging, inventory accuracy, and equipment logistics in partnership with supply chain and warehousing teams.
* Conduct field audits and site visits to verify installation quality, data accuracy, safety compliance, and adherence to the client's construction standards.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Serve as the primary project-level interface with client utility representatives, coordinating priorities, schedules, and issue resolution.
* Facilitate recurring project meetings, steering committee updates, and status reviews with client leadership, internal management, and cross-functional partners.
* Prepare and deliver clear, data-driven progress reports, dashboards, and executive briefings to the AMI Program leadership team.
* Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with client counterparts, municipalities, permitting authorities, and community stakeholders as needed.
Risk, Quality & Compliance
* Own the project risk register; identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to schedule, cost, safety, customer experience, and technology performance.
* Ensure work is performed in accordance with OSHA requirements, client safety programs, applicable utility and telecommunications standards, and all relevant state and federal regulations.
* Support quality assurance and quality control activities, validating that field data, meter records, and network configuration data are accurately captured in client systems.
* Champion continuous improvement, identifying process, tooling, and workflow enhancements that improve productivity and deployment quality.
Financial & Reporting Accountability
* Manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete; approve timesheets, invoices, and change orders within delegated authority.
* Track earned value, production metrics, and program KPIs; reconcile actuals against baseline and communicate variances with recommended actions.
* Maintain thorough project documentation, including meeting minutes, decision logs, change requests, and closeout records.
Qualifications
Education
* Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and progressive utility project management experience will be considered.
Certification
* Required: Project Management Professional (PMP) from PMI, PRINCE2 Practitioner, or IPMA Level C (or higher).
* Preferred: PMI-ACP, Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or equivalent Agile credential; OSHA 10/30.
Experience
* 5+ years of progressive project management experience, with at least 3 years leading projects within the utility, energy, telecommunications, or infrastructure sectors.
* Demonstrated experience managing AMI, smart grid, metering, or comparable field deployment programs strongly preferred.
* Proven success directing contractors and multi-disciplinary field teams across geographically distributed work sites.
* Working fluency with both Waterfall and Agile/Hybrid delivery methodologies, and the ability to apply the right approach to the right workstream.
* Prior experience supporting an investor-owned utility or municipal utility client is highly desirable.
Technical Skills
* Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and MS Project; experience with Primavera P6, Jira, Smartsheet, or Monday.com.
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to build, maintain, and interpret dashboards, schedules, and financial reports.
* Familiarity with GIS platforms (Esri/ArcGIS), meter data management (MDM) systems, head-end systems (HES), and work management systems such as Maximo, SAP PM, or ClickSoftware is a plus.
* Comfort reviewing construction drawings, scopes of work, and utility standards documentation.
Other Requirements
* Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with executive-level presence.
* Ability to work independently while leading and coordinating across multiple teams, contractors, and client stakeholders.
* Willingness to travel throughout Florida for site oversight, contractor coordination, and client engagement.
* Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
* Relocation expenses will be considered for the right candidate.
