Physical Therapy Assistant

Avera Health, a regional health system based in Sioux Falls, SD, is seeking a dedicated Physical Therapy Assistant to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department. In this role, you will work under the direction and supervision of licensed Physical Therapists to provide high-quality rehabilitative care to patients across a variety of settings. You will assist with implementing individualized treatment plans, supporting patients in restoring mobility, strength, and functional independence following illness, injury, or surgery. As a Physical Therapy Assistant at Avera Health, you will guide patients through prescribed therapeutic exercises, functional training, balance and gait activities, and the safe use of assistive devices. You will help prepare treatment areas, set up and clean equipment, and ensure a safe, supportive environment for each patient. You will observe and document patient responses to therapy, accurately record treatment activities within the electronic medical record, and promptly report changes in patient condition or progress to the supervising Physical Therapist. Working closely with a collaborative interdisciplinary team, you will provide compassionate, patient-centered care aligned with Avera Health’s values of hospitality, stewardship, and respect. You will educate patients and families on home exercise programs, safe mobility techniques, and strategies to support continued recovery outside the clinical setting. Professional, clear communication with therapists, nurses, physicians, and other care team members is essential to coordinate care and optimize outcomes. You should demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, the ability to motivate and encourage patients, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical quality and safety. Physical demands of the position include frequent standing, walking, lifting, and assisting with transfers.
