Part-Time School Crossing Guard

Location: Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department

Starting rate for 2025: 12.75/hr.

Proposed starting rate for 2026 (not yet adopted in the budget ): 16.00/hr.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is routine work involving responsibility for directing traffic at school crossings to ensure the safety of school children. Work is performed under the general supervision of a member of the police department or the principal of the school to which they are assigned. Work location can vary, depending on the assignment.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

1. Stands in the middle of the street or intersection and halts traffic to permit school children to safely cross streets;

2. Manually keys traffic signal or other motorist warning device;

3. Walks individual and groups of children across streets;

4. Encourages children to obey traffic rules;

5. Directs moving traffic to ensure safe and orderly flows;

6. Gives directions to motorists, pedestrians and school children;

7. Makes out accident reports;

8. Performs miscellaneous related duties;

9. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Good knowledge of the safety problems posed by children walking to and from school; good knowledge of the effect of vehicle speed, weather conditions and road conditions on the braking capability of motorist; ability to be firm with, yet helpful and courteous to children and motorist; willingness to assume responsibility for the safety of small children; willingness to work in all weather conditions; tact; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
