Position Summary A mid‑level Fire Design Engineer in the G&D sector, responsible for designing intermediate building systems, preparing design documents, and performing engineering calculations in coordination with project teams, with occasional task management and mentoring of less experienced designers.
Key Responsibilities
Performs calculations and designs basic to intermediate systems with minimal supervision.
Prepares system layouts, detailed drawings and schematics.
Reviews shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
Prepares or modifies reports, plans and designs for projects.
Performs research and makes recommendations on feasibility of systems or equipment; evaluates products for application.
Provides technical guidance to others when appropriate.
Collaborates on business development or pursuit activities.
Participates in client, company and industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
Fosters a client‑centric mindset and approach.
Communicates with clients to coordinate requirements and scope of work; maintains proactive communication throughout the project cycle.
Answers questions from clients and architects.
Visits job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
Assists in resolving conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as needed.
Identifies and seeks to fill gaps in industry and discipline knowledge continuously.
Maintains knowledge of industry software including Revit, Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office; acts as a resource for training or assisting others.
Researches new products, industry trends and evolving codes and standards.
Understands and applies Henderson’s design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures.
Performs limited project management responsibilities under supervision; asks questions when unfamiliar.
May support or be responsible for project coordination activities such as managing emails, coordinating scope and schedule, attending client meetings, ensuring project quality, responding to client questions and coordinating project delivery.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering field (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, architectural) and 3 years of relevant experience, or 6 years of experience with a high‑school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
Additional certifications and accreditations in relevant technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD) preferred.
Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL) preferred.
Intermediate knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards required; preference for broader practice knowledge.
Intermediate proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam Revu required.
High technical aptitude to learn and utilize various systems and processes.
Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey clearly with designers at all levels.
Effective critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Team‑oriented and willing to function in a collaborative environment; ability to lead less experienced designers; also works independently.
Adaptable to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs.
Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and adapt to coaching.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and engineering design software applicable to discipline.
Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies described in this job description.
