Senior Database Administrator
with deep expertise in Snowflake and Azure Cloud? Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead our transition from on‑premise servers to a modern cloud architecture. We are seeking a technical lead to ensure our data systems are secure, optimized, and ready for the future. Please read the Minimum Qualifications for all of the requirements for this position.
In This Role, You Will
Keep things running: manage databases daily, ensuring adequate space and proper configuration for the team.
Lead our move to the cloud: help redesign data storage, shifting from older on‑site setups to modern cloud technology like Azure, Google GCP and AWS.
Protect our data: design backup plans and ensure quick recovery when needed.
Fix and improve: identify bottlenecks and implement solutions to maximize performance.
Draw the blueprints: use data modeling tools to map how information fits together.
Help the team: mentor other IT staff and teach them how to use new database tools.
Stay updated: keep software secure with updates and patches, and stay informed on new tech trends.

The Team You will join the IT Division within the Department of County Assets (DCA). Led by IT Manager Michelle Smith, the team focuses on providing technical support that keeps the County moving. We are in the middle of a major shift to cloud-based tools and seek someone excited about this evolution.

Minimum Qualifications / Transferable Skills
Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience will be considered
5 years of experience in IT development and database administration. (Equivalency 9 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
This position requires specialized knowledge. You must demonstrate that you have (KSAs) skills listed below.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Advanced knowledge of or skill in Azure Cloud (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards, etc).
Working knowledge of or skill with Snowflake.
Advanced knowledge of or skill with BI Data Marts and Data Warehousing, including design and best practices.
Advanced experience with ETLs for loading data for reporting, in collaboration with developers.
Advanced knowledge of database logging tools (e.g., Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).
Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms (Tableau, Tableau Server, Power BI, Power BI Report Server, SSRS).
Advanced knowledge of installing, performance tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering on‑prem MS SQL Server and cloud environments.
Working knowledge of MS Integration Services (SSIS).
Working knowledge of security, authorization, and authentication in Microsoft Active Directory and Azure Entra ID.
Working knowledge of MS SQL Server and Azure cloud backup and recovery design and implementation.
Basic knowledge of networking, firewall concepts, Microsoft Windows Server administration, SAN/NAS storage, and virtualization (MS Hyper‑V or VMware).
Advanced knowledge of RDBMS management tools including MS SQL Server Management Studio.
Working knowledge of T‑SQL (stored procedures, query plans, functions, views, indexes, triggers).
Working knowledge of database modeling, data conversion, and ETL tools such as SSIS.
Basic knowledge of Administrative Scripting (C#, WMI, PowerShell, Rs Utility, MSBuild).
Ability to pass a criminal records check.

Additional Information:
This is an hourly, AFSCME Local 88 union‑represented position and is eligible for overtime. Work location is the Multnomah Building, Portland, OR; Telework is Routine but some onsite meetings are required. Various schedules are available. Residency in Oregon or Washington. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Pay range is guidance; actual compensation will follow Oregon Equal Pay Law based on experience, education, seniority, training, and tenure.
