Educational Content Specialist – Preschool Special Education (Multilingual Projects)
Duration:
5 Months

Columbia, MD (Remote)
Project Overview We are looking for a consultant who can lead the development of
family-focused educational content
for preschool special education.
This project is centered around creating materials for families of young children with disabilities, especially those from
multilingual backgrounds or those who are new to the U.S. education system .
The work includes building:
A set of
short, easy-to-understand family guides
Companion videos
that explain the same topics in an engaging way
The goal is to make complex topics like the IEP process, eligibility, and services
clear, practical, and accessible , even for families with limited formal education or limited English proficiency.
Scope of Work You will be responsible for creating a complete set of materials, including:
Family Guides:
Develop
3 short guides
(each around 4–8 pages)
Each guide should:
Work on its own, but also connect as part of a series
Be written in
plain, everyday language
Be easy to follow for families who may not be familiar with the education system
Include
visual elements
such as icons, illustrations, or simple graphics
Design should work for both
print and digital formats
Topics will include:
Basics of preschool special education and family rights
The Child Find process (referrals, evaluations, eligibility)
Understanding the IEP (what it is, who is involved, what to expect, and how families can participate)
Video Content:
Create
3 short videos
(3–6 minutes each), one for each guide
Videos should explain key ideas in a way that does not rely heavily on reading
Must include captions
Should feel relatable and easy to follow for families
Language & Accessibility:
All materials must be produced in:
English and Spanish (required)
Additional languages are a plus
Content should be written at a level that is easy to understand (around middle school reading level)
All deliverables must meet accessibility standards (ADA / Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA)
Collaboration & Coordination
Work closely with stakeholders and incorporate feedback into deliverables
Participate in structured review cycles (at least two rounds per deliverable)
Support user or community feedback sessions to improve content quality
Contribute to project planning, timelines, and deliverable tracking
Required Skills & Experience
Strong understanding of
special education systems , especially preschool-level services
Familiarity with the
IEP process
and family engagement practices
Experience creating
plain-language content
for non-technical audiences
Background in developing materials for:
Families
Multilingual communities
Low-literacy audiences
Experience with:
Writing and structuring educational guides
Producing or scripting short informational videos
Working with translators or multilingual content
Ability to create content that is:
Clear and practical
Culturally respectful
Easy to navigate and visually supported
Preferred Experience
Previous work with:
Public education systems
Early childhood or PreK programs
Experience engaging directly with:
Immigrant or newcomer families
Non-English-speaking communities
Exposure to participatory design or community feedback processes
Ability to support additional languages (e.g., Haitian Creole, Amharic, Arabic)
Education
Master’s degree or teaching certification in:
Special Education, or
A closely related field
Additional Requirements
Familiarity with accessibility standards (ADA, Section 508, WCAG)
Ability to provide or support accessibility documentation such as VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template)
Comfortable managing a project end-to-end, from content development to final deliverables
