Position Summary
UNM Online is looking for a person who enjoys the process of turning data into insight and working collaboratively with an exceptional team as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst. UNM Online is a department of 14 regular staff and a few student employees. We are driven to expand personal and economic opportunities for our students through the power of higher education. This position plays a role in advancing online education by contributing to the unit’s business intelligence operations. The selected candidate will collaborate on data‑driven initiatives that support the development and delivery of online courses, degree programs, and institutional priorities. The Business Intelligence Analyst is responsible for the design, development and delivery of innovative BI solutions that inform both operational and strategic decision‑making. The role requires strong, collaborative partnerships across departments and campuses to identify data needs, ensuring the integrity and usability of reports and dashboards. The position also contributes to a broader community of higher education data professionals‑sharing best practices, fostering innovation, and helping shape the future of data‑informed online learning. At UNM Online, the Business Intelligence Analyst operates in a hybrid work environment that allows for work from home but also involves travel for in‑person meetings and events at the Albuquerque Campus and other locations across New Mexico. This is not an exclusively remote position, and the selected candidate will need to live within commuting distance of Albuquerque, NM. Duties and Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain reports, data queries, databases, dashboards, and visualizations using BI tools to support departmental and institutional initiatives. Collaborate with the unit and partners to define reporting needs, develop integrated analyses, dashboards, reports, and presentations. Maintain and update existing BI products and dashboards for routine and ad‑hoc queries from multiple data sources. Monitor and evaluate data sources, ensuring accuracy, integrity, security, and compliance with applicable standards and governance requirements. Validate reports, visualizations, and analyses; conduct root cause analyses and implement appropriate resolutions. Document BI processes, reporting logic, and data definitions to support accuracy, transparency, and reproducibility. May train staff to update and use databases, dashboards and reports. Support organizational and process improvement initiatives by providing data analysis and performance insights. Contribute to the development and delivery of training programs to assist end users in understanding and applying BI tools and reports. May represent the unit in university‑wide BI and/or data governance communities, sharing knowledge and best practices. Maintain knowledge of trends in higher education, business intelligence, data visualization, and emerging technologies. Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned. Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of relational databases, modern data structures, and reporting methods, with the ability to develop solutions for diverse reporting needs. Ability to design, develop, and interpret data visualizations and reports for diverse technical and non‑technical audiences. Knowledge of data governance practices and applicable regulatory requirements. Knowledge of enterprise business intelligence tools, development of customized reports, and publication of self‑service dashboards. Ability to resolve data storage and retrieval problems and collaborate with IT staff to design modifications. Knowledge of scripting languages and data visualization software. Skills in documenting business intelligence processes, reporting logic, and data definitions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in examining and re‑engineering operations, procedures, developing, and implementing new technical strategies and procedures. Ability to organize and prioritize work. Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies in BI and analytics. Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requirements: a) Contributes to a team of one or more employees tasked with developing analytics and data visualization to support the Business Intelligence (BI) needs of a department or organizational unit; b) supports the development of user requirements, identifies data sources and repositories and develops solutions to provide actionable insights; c) creates and maintains documents such as end‑user manuals and handbooks; d) analyzes, interprets and manipulates data; e) supports communications and training of staff on information resources and data. Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on data teams in a higher education setting. Experience collaborating with data analysts and developers. Experience with query tools or languages such as DAX, Power Query, Python, R, or SQL. Experience with ibi WebFOCUS, Microsoft Power BI, or a comparable business intelligence tool. Experience with database management tools such as DBeaver or SQL Server Management Studio. Experience interpreting and navigating large datasets in higher education, particularly datasets generated by Ellucian Banner and Salesforce. Experience with Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate, Azure SQL, or SQL Server. The ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. Experience with the Microsoft Office suite, including Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and experience with Zoom or other virtual meeting tools. Experience participating in cross‑functional projects and collaborations across the university. Personal or professional experience with online learning and educational technologies, and familiarity with online education models and metrics. Equal Opportunity Employer
