Each patient is supported by a two-technician team—one anesthetist and one dental technician—with licensed technicians rotating between these roles daily. The technician is responsible for safe and effective anesthesia management, detailed dental record-keeping, and maintaining a smooth surgical workflow.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting dental equipment, instrument sterilization, client communication and education, and assisting veterinarians during consultations, procedures, and estimate discussions.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*
* Assess anesthesia equipment (i.e. leak check endotracheal tubes, leak check the anesthesia machines)
* Assist with admitting patients for surgery, making sure all necessary paperwork is completed
* Perform dental imaging and charting under the guidance of the veterinarian or VTS
* Conduct dental scaling and polishing to remove plaque and calculus from patients' teeth
* Assist the veterinarian and / or VTS by charting the oral examination
* Assist the veterinarian or VTS with oral surgery and other advanced procedures
* Maintain and sterilize dental instruments and equipment
* Educate clients on postop instructions, proper home dental care & preventive measures
* Assist with maintaining inventory of dental supplies and ordering as needed
* Participate in continuing education to stay current with advancements in veterinary dentistry
* Provide anesthesia for our patients
* Enter client charges and create discharge instructions
* Start appointments and assist the veterinarian as needed
* Create estimates and review them with clients
* Make postoperative phone calls to check on patients the day after surgery or assist with the veterinary assistant or CSR in doing so.
*Required Skills & Qualifications*:
* Associate's degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited program preferred
* 2+ years experience as a veterinary technician, preferably in a dental specialty practice
* Knowledge of veterinary dental procedures, equipment, and charting (we will also train)
* Ability to perform anesthesia
* Excellent communication, client education skills and teamwork skills
* Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
*General Requirements*:
* Ability to lift and carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds
* Ability to stand or sit for extended periods and move around the practice safely
* Willing to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the practice, which may include evenings, weekends, and some holidays
* Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times
* Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in veterinary dentistry
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
