Overview
Evergreen: Staff DevOps Engineer is a remote role within Ad Hoc's Veterans Affairs business unit, working to transform the VA into a modern digital services organization. The position emphasizes delivering scalable, impactful digital services for public-sector outcomes and collaborating with government partners to improve service design, product management, and technology. Primary Responsibilities
Staff DevOps Engineer serves as an emerging subject matter expert and individual contributor with a high level of trust, autonomy, and empowerment. Lead and monitor work to meet scope, schedule, and delivery requirements and support adjacent programs within the business unit. Influence software engineering practices, represent the engineering discipline in planning sessions, and communicate tradeoffs to stakeholders. Proactively communicate with stakeholders and drive improvements in software engineering and DevOps processes and practices. Provide strong technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to teams. Guide the development and operation of the full lifecycle of the solution infrastructure. Provide expertise in DevOps use of cloud-based services, defined using infrastructure-as-code tooling. Ensure security best-practices and defense-in-depth in design and operations. Ensure systems operate in alignment with CMS/NIST quality and compliance standards to retain ATO. Plan and execute migrations to cloud-native data services. Participate in conversations and planning sessions with partners and key stakeholders. Travel periodically to work with and present to clients, partners, and stakeholders as needed. Evolve complex and ambiguous products to uncover constraints and new opportunities. Communicate effectively on existing systems, design decisions, past performance, and project history for bid-writing and client-facing communications. Participate in technical depth interviews with new candidates as part of the hiring process. Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of experience (relevant years of experience may be substituted for education). Expert-level knowledge in multiple infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible). Mastery of key DevOps concepts: installing software, virtualization, containerization, networking, etc. Benefits

In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities outlined above. The starting pay range for this role is $140,000-$154,000. Actual compensation is influenced by factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
