In this position, Ford Motor Company has an exciting opportunity for a Design and Release Engineer focused on supporting the development of Steering Systems that meet the highest quality and functional requirements. The position will focus on the validation and release of mechanical hardware designs for current production and/or forward model steering systems in major and minor Ford programs.
The D&R Engineer is responsible for managing product release CAD and BOM structures, including assembly positioning and mass attribute analysis. This role also includes facilitating supplier data integration and developing CAD studies to support and drive design improvements.
The D&R Engineer is expected to understand and effectively utilize product check‑in/check‑out processes, version control, data release, and change management within Ford’s PLM ecosystem.
The D&R Engineer will perform feasibility analyses using CAD tools, including draft angle analysis and clearance checks to support manufacturing and machining requirements.
Responsibilities
Work with suppliers to develop, design, and release EPAS mechanicals design changes for in‑flight programs (gear, assist mechanism).
Responsible for management of material cost reduction design changes with supplier and tracking status progression and execution with internal teams.
Work with suppliers to obtain quotes, timelines for design changes on current model programs. Track change requests, quotes, documentation in JIRA database.
Work with supplier and cost‑estimating teams to obtain needed cost breakdowns for engineering changes.
Get approval of tool orders, long‑lead funding, and ED&T.
Communicate with suppliers, Vehicle Dynamics, Vehicle Program Management, CAD designers, release analysts, etc., to get changes processed.
Problem‑solve design, manufacturing, and quality issues.
Responsible for failure mode avoidance documentation (boundary diagrams, P‑diagrams, DFMEA’s, etc.).
Sign‑off drawings, DVP’s, PVP’s, DVP&R’s, PVP&R’s.
Issue engineering sample orders for team and track department material budget status.
Track program part orders and provide transparency to the supplier.
Support forward‑model program management by tracking requirements due at each milestone.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
2+ years of steering systems experience in an automotive domain or similar industry.
1 year of CAD experience.
Master’s degree in engineering (preferred).
Strong leadership skills – inherent self‑starter, self‑motivated and strong drive for results.
Problem‑solving skills.
Strong project management skills.
Strong oral/written communication skills.
Failure mode avoidance skills.
At least two years of automotive‑related experiences.
Ability to travel and support Ford Motor Company final assembly plants and component supplier plants when required.

This position is a salary grade 5 and ranges from $65,100–$109,300. This position is a salary grade 6 and ranges from $74,300–$124,500. This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $86,600–$144,900. This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $99,100–$166,200. Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate’s skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
