Systems Administrator I
who will be all-in on our mission and is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and assisting in the administration of the college's server, virtualization, and storage environments. This position supports the daily operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of enterprise systems including Windows and Linux servers, virtualization platforms, and backup solutions. The Systems Administrator works collaboratively with IT staff and campus departments to maintain system availability, reliability, and security while supporting the instructional, administrative, and operational technology needs of the college. Qualifications
EDUCATION: Required:
Associate's Degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS), Information Technology, Systems Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
Bachelor's Degree in CIS, Networking, Information Technology, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE: Required:
Two (2) or more years of experience working in an IT department in a systems support or systems administration role.
Preferred:
Three (3) or more years of experience supporting and maintaining server environments within a higher education or similar enterprise environment. Job Duties & Responsibilities
Assist in administering and maintaining Windows Server environments including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and DFS file services. Support and maintain Microsoft 365 (O365) services including Exchange Online, account provisioning, licensing, and related services. Assist in the administration and monitoring of VMware virtualization infrastructure. Support Red Hat Linux servers including system updates, patching, and troubleshooting. Assist with maintenance and support of legacy phone systems and Voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure. Monitor system performance, availability, and system health, responding to alerts and incidents as needed. Perform routine system maintenance, updates, and patching to ensure system security and operational reliability. Assist in managing backup and recovery operations using Veeam, including backup verification and restore testing. Troubleshoot and resolve server, storage, and infrastructure-related issues in a timely manner. Maintain accurate system documentation including procedures, configuration records, and operational standards. Collaborate with IT teams to support infrastructure upgrades, system deployments, and technology initiatives. Provide technical support to IT staff and campus departments related to system services and infrastructure. Participate in performance evaluations and professional development activities as assigned. Perform other work-related duties as required. Knowledge of Windows Server operating systems and core services including Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration and cloud services. Basic knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMware. Basic knowledge of Linux server administration (Red Hat preferred). Understanding of enterprise backup and recovery tools and concepts, including Veeam. Experience supporting enterprise file services such as DFS shares. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve technical issues efficiently. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure. Ability to communicate and interact professionally with faculty, staff, students, and vendors. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of college and departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Commitment to maintaining professional conduct, workplace safety, and continuous improvement. Ability to comply with all college, local, state, and federal procedures and regulations.
Salary:
Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position.
Pay grade
11 (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies up to twenty-five (25) pounds as needed.
Working Conditions:
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary).
Work Environment:
This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment including computers, phones, copy machines, and filing systems. The work environment may involve frequent interruptions in a high-traffic area. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office, Colleague, and other educational and security-related applications. Work may occasionally occur outside the office environment with minimal supervision.
