Job Description
Senior Application Developer
Be part of a team where integrity matters and success inspires. U.S. Bank is seeking a Senior Application Developer with design and development experience to contribute to our technology initiatives. In this role you will be part of the EU Authorisation Switch Team responsible for delivering highly available solutions in a mission-critical environment. The application handles payment transactions to card schemes and is based on a Stratus OS environment using COBOL.
This is a permanent full-time position based in our Arklow Office in Ireland.
Responsibilities
Design, code, test, debug, document, maintain, and modify computer programs of high complexity, significance, and risk
Recommend solutions to improve business with a focus on core architecture, technology automation and standards
Guide others through change impact analysis while promoting automation-first and DevOps-aligned practices
Establish, refine and integrate development and test environment tools and software as needed
Review, analyse, refine and integrate development and test environment tools and software as needed
Create and recommend improvements to unit, test plans and testing processes based on assessment of organizational needs
Collaborate closely with teams in all stages of the software development lifecycle including design, development and testing of the system
Design basic and detailed program specifications while ensuring that expected performance levels are achieved by managing interfaces, service levels, standards, and configurations
Guide technical staff and business partners to investigate, review, and solve complex, multidisciplinary problems
Monitor operating efficiency and organizational needs of existing application systems and identify opportunities to fine-tune and optimize applications
Demonstrate solid understanding of the business needs driving the projects
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
4+ years of real-time application development experience
3+ years of experience supporting mission-critical applications
Proven track record in the payments industry
Preferred Skills / Experience
Extensive experience in application design, architecture, SDLC, including Agile and CI/CD practices
Automation-focused testing and quality engineering
Release management and change control
Application maintenance and modernization
IT standards, procedures, and policy
Modeling (data, process, events, objects)
Experience with automated unit, integration, and regression tests
Testable coding with mocks and modular design
Integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and enforcing quality gates
Experience with one or more programming or scripting languages used for test automation
Subject Matter Expertise in programming and software engineering best practices with emphasis on early and continuous testing
Desirable Experience
Development in a Stratus VOS environment using COBOL is desirable but not essential
Experience with JIRA, Confluence, Git/Bitbucket and Jenkins
Cross-organizational agile, portfolio or DevOps experience
SQL database querying proficiency

Location expectations
This role requires working from a U.S. Bank location three (3) or more days per week.
