Role Purpose

The Superintendent Pharmacist is the professional lead for the pharmacy group and a senior member of the management team, responsible for ensuring that all pharmacies operate in full compliance with Irish pharmacy legislation while supporting the group's sustainable commercial performance.


In addition, the role combines professional governance, operational leadership, and commercial oversight, ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance are embedded within a well-run, financially resilient business.


Statutory Responsibilities

The Superintendent Pharmacist will fulfil all duties under the Pharmacy Act 2007 and PSI guidance, including:



  • Acting as the named Superintendent Pharmacist for the group
  • Ensuring compliance with:
  • PSI Rules and guidance
  • Irish pharmacy legislation
  • HPRA requirements
  • Establishing and maintaining effective governance systems and procedures
  • Ensuring appropriate pharmacist supervision and professional standards
  • Overseeing safe procurement, storage, supply, and disposal of medicinal products
  • Supporting and overseeing supervising and support pharmacists across all locations
  • Overseeing the appointment and suitability of supervising and support pharmacists
  • Appraising and generally managing the pharmacists
  • Managing professional conduct, competence, and fitness-to-practise matters where required

Expanded Full-Time Responsibilities
1. Clinical Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain group SOPs
  • Lead PSI inspection readiness and response
  • Conduct or oversee:
  • Internal audits
  • Controlled drug audits
  • Monitor dispensing accuracy, near-miss reporting, and patient safety systems
  • Drive continuous quality improvement across all pharmacies
  • Act as a professional mentor and clinical lead for all pharmacists
  • Support Supervising Pharmacists with:
  • Professional judgement challenges
  • Complex clinical cases
  • Oversee recruitment, induction, and professional development of pharmacists
  • Support recruitment, induction, and professional development of the dispensary team
  • Oversight of the group’s pharmacist rota

3. Regulatory & External Liaison

  • Act as the primary liaison with:
  • Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI)
  • HPRA
  • HSE and other stakeholders
  • Oversee compliance with private and public service contracts, new or enhanced pharmacy services, vaccination services, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection and patient confidentiality standards in clinical settings

4. Dispensary Purchasing & Stock Optimisation

Working closely with the dispensary purchaser and supervising pharmacists, the Superintendent Pharmacist will support safe, compliant, and commercially efficient management of dispensary stock, including:



  • Oversight of dispensary purchasing policies to ensure:
  • Compliance with legislation
  • Regular review of:
  • Negative stock levels
  • Overstock and slow-moving ("dead") stock
  • Identifying opportunities for:
  • Internal transfers of stock between pharmacies to reduce waste and expiry
  • Stock rationalisation across the group
  • Supporting Supervising Pharmacists in maintaining accurate stock records
  • Ensuring controlled drugs, high-cost items and high-risk medicines are always managed appropriately
  • Ensure the timely roll out of all IT updates (from software till providers in particular) to ensure the dispensary management is as efficient as possible from an IT perspective and using available tecknology solutions(ie script finder etc.)

5. Commercial & Performance Oversight

To support the sustainability of the group, the Superintendent Pharmacist will contribute to commercial performance monitoring, including:



  • Reviewing KPIs for supervising/manager pharmacists, such as:
  • Dispensed items
  • Generic/PI conversion
  • Dispensary efficiency and accuracy
  • Stock control and wastage
  • Service delivery and professional standards
  • Providing structured feedback and support to Supervising Pharmacists
  • Working collaboratively with the senior management team to:
  • Identify performance improvement opportunities
  • Support underperforming locations through action plans
  • Ensuring all commercial performance oversight aligns with:
  • Professional ethics
  • PSI standards
  • Patient-centred care
  • Oversee investigation of:
  • Regulatory breaches
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action planning
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and reporting where required

7. Strategic & Business Support

  • Work closely with senior management to align clinical governance with business strategy
  • Encourage new technological/IT dispensing systems and processes to improve efficiency
  • Support implementation of group-wide dispensing systems, processes, and technology
  • Assess regulatory and professional risks associated with new services (e.g. prescribing expansion, digital health services)
  • New pharmacy acquisitions or openings
  • Relocations, refurbishments, and service expansions

8. Training & Development

  • Identify training needs across the group for the dispensary teams. xcfaprz
  • Oversee mandatory training compliance (e.g. CPD, ePortfolio, new services, vaccinations, etc.)
  • Support CPD culture and continuous professional development planning
  • Deliver or coordinate internal training sessions where appropriate

Time Commitment & Working Pattern

  • Full-time role
  • Flexible working arrangement (mix of:
  • On-site pharmacy visits
  • Head office/remote work)

Professional Accountability

The Superintendent Pharmacist is professionally accountable to the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and operationally accountable to the managing director/Pharmacy Owner/Internal Strategy Board, while maintaining independent professional judgement at all times in the interests of patient safety.
