The Material Flow Engineering team is seeking a motivated and accomplished Automation Project Engineer who will lead the design and implementation of automated guided vehicles and associated equipment for new and existing factories and programs at Tesla. This position will be based in Gigafactory Texas in Austin, TX or Gigafactory Nevada in Sparks, NV. The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment where they will work as part of a strong, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being attempted in any industry today. Tesla's Material Flow Engineering team designs and integrates autonomous mobile robotic vehicles for a wide variety of applications such as conveyance, warehousing, and assembly within Tesla production factories.
The Commissioning Project Engineer will support the project for entire lifecycle from concept design through deployment and sustaining of mobile robots into production operations. In this role, you will function as the Lead Engineer responsible for application requirements, development and execution of the mobile robot system. The role entails significant leadership in product and manufacturing system execution. The role will involve extensive collaboration with other teams and engineering disciplines. The role is located at Gigafactory Texas or Nevada and requires travel to other Tesla sites globally. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing manufacturing processes through hands-on involvement, solving challenges with creative first principles solutions and bias for action to execute when non-trivial obstacles block project progress.
Responsibilities
Design automated material handling solutions to establish new and improved material flows throughout the facilities using automated vehicles
Develop analytical models to establish design criteria and overall system performance criterial
Lead the development, detailed engineering design, and system build of mobile robot programs
Implement mobile robots in production environments
Manage creating, maintain and communicating project schedules
Develop test programs to ensure functional, performance, and safety requirements are met
Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and uptime
Debug and implement corrective actions for breakdowns and chronic equipment failure
Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, supervisors, and operators
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
5 years+ of experience in material handling automation: AS/RS, electric monorail system, conveyance, mobile robotics (AGVs or AMRs), and robotic material handling
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all organizational levels
A passion to work on mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electro mechanical/pneumatic systems, motion controls and navigation & vision systems
A solid engineering background with hands-on experience and high mechanical aptitude
Must understand the integration of equipment design into existing or new systems
Values people, ethics, commitment, fun and an engaging culture
Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
Must understand the nuances of autonomous system requirements, algorithms and operating environments
Knowledge on firmware, safety controllers, mobile robot fleet and track programming
