Lead Substation Engineer

Our client, a leading electricity infrastructure company in Ireland, is seeking an experienced Senior Team Lead – Substation to join their Engineering and Major Projects team on a 12-month contract basis.

The successful candidate will lead a substation design team responsible for the delivery of high voltage transmission and distribution infrastructure projects. This role combines technical leadership, team management and project delivery across a diverse portfolio of substation projects, ensuring high standards of safety, quality and performance are achieved.

• Lead and manage a substation design team delivering high-quality designs and safety coordination across a portfolio of transmission and distribution projects
• Oversee design delivery across internal teams and external delivery models including EPC and Design & Build frameworks
• Act as Lead Engineer across a portfolio of projects, providing technical leadership from concept through to commissioning
• Manage project coordination with external framework designers and delivery partners
• Develop and maintain standardised substation design templates and engineering libraries
• Drive continuous improvement and standardisation of engineering processes, incorporating lessons learned from project reviews
• Provide technical guidance across all project phases including scoping, costing, design, construction, testing and inspection
• Manage team resourcing, forecasting, work integration and quality assurance of deliverables
• Lead stakeholder engagement across internal teams, project delivery functions and external partners
• Provide mentoring, training and development support to engineering team members
• Ensure delivery of projects in line with safety, quality and time and cost objectives
• Approve key technical outputs and manage specialist workstreams

• Minimum 7 years’ experience in substation design within transmission or distribution environments
• Strong understanding of substation project lifecycle including design, tendering, construction and commissioning
• Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and delivering complex infrastructure projects
• Strong commercial and project management capability
• Ability to manage multiple xcfaprz priorities and deliver within tight deadlines
• Excellent communication, stakeholder management and report writing skills
• Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing technical teams
• Strong focus on safety, quality and delivery performance
• Third level qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience
• Knowledge of PSDP processes
• Experience in pre-commissioning activities
• Experience working within large-scale utility or infrastructure environments
• 12-month contract
• Hybrid working model (minimum 2 days onsite in Cork)
