*Job Overview*
We are hiring a Lead Veterinary Surgical Technician at The Animal Clinic, a full-service small animal hospital serving Erie since 1975.
This is a clinical leadership role with a mentoring component. In partnership with the Institute of Medical and Business Careers (IMBC), you will work in a real-world training environment where live cases drive learning. You will play a central role in anesthesia, surgery, and patient care while mentoring veterinary technician students through direct, in-the-moment instruction.
We are looking for a highly capable technician who takes ownership of their cases, values clinical excellence, and motivated to teach and develop others. This role combines high-level surgical/anesthesia responsibility with the opportunity to help shape both clinical standards and the next generation of veterinary technicians in a fast-paced setting.
*Responsibilities*
*Surgery/Anesthesia*
● Lead anesthesia protocols, induction, monitoring, and recovery across all surgical cases.
● Prepare and maintain surgical suites, instruments, and sterility standards, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety protocols.
● Assist veterinarians during surgery with advanced technical proficiency.
*Clinical Standards & Impact*
* Help define and elevate anesthesia and surgical protocols.
* Drive consistency, safety, and efficiency in perioperative care.
* Partner with veterinarians to improve patient outcomes and workflow.
* Ensure compliance with OSHA and hospital safety protocols including radiation safety
*Client Communication & Financial Responsibilities*
● Confidently reviews surgical plans and estimates with clients.
● Clearly communicate value, risk, and medical reasoning
● Build trust through professionalism and clarity.
*Teaching & Development*
● Mentor technician students and junior staff in a live clinical setting
● Provide direct feedback, coaching, and skill development.
*Required Skills*
● Advanced proficiency in veni-puncture, IV catheter placement, and endotracheal intubation (canine and feline)
● Strong command of veterinary pharmacology, including anesthetic protocols, drug calculations, and emergency interventions.
● Ability to *independently manage anesthesia cases* from induction through recovery, including real-time adjustment and complication management.
● Proficient in ECG interpretation, including recognition of common arrhythmias.
*● *Demonstrated ability to *anticipate, recognize, and respond to anesthetic and perioperative complications.*
● Ability to *teach, coach, and clearly communicate technical skills* to technicians and students of varying experience levels.
● Strong clinical judgment and decision-making in fast-paced surgical environments
● Dental radiography experience preferred.
*Qualifications*
● *3+ years of direct veterinary experience*, with strong focus in anesthesia and surgery
● *Advanced anesthesia competency* (monitoring, drug calculations, complication management
● Strong proficiency in:
· IV catheter placement, intubation
· ECG interpretation and patient monitoring
· Surgical preparation and assistance
● Demonstrated expertise in leadership, instruction, and effective communication.
● Credentialed technician (*CVT/LVT/RVT*) strongly preferred.
