Job Title: Applications Developer Engineer III Location:
Remote - PST Duration: 12 months
Position Requirements: • Remote role; candidate can support typical work hours in local time zone, but must make themselves available for PST meetings as necessary • Contract is expected to last ~ 1 year • Degree preferred; AWS certification nice to have, not a requirement • 5-7 years' experience required in a software development role
Top must-have skills include the following: • Java development experience • Cloud infrastructure experience • Previous experience building APIs and troubleshooting microservices • AWS, Azure, Google Cloud knowledge • HM would prefer candidates with full stack development experience; otherwise, he will look at backend developers
Desired soft skills: • Good communication skills (verbal and written) • Honesty (ETW must be willing to ask questions if they're unsure of processes) • Punctuality and reliability • Ability to "speak the language" of the software that the team is working with; HM needs someone who has the minimum experience coming into the role, as they cannot afford the time to get someone more "green" up to speed quickly • Previous client GT experience would be a huge plus • This ETW will help support full stack development in SRE incident management solutions • ETW will work directly with ~4 other engineers; will also be working cross functionally with SREs and other developers quite often • There is an on-call component to this role; HM states it's rare (every 5 weeks), and OT will be paid for calls that are received/worked on during that period • AI knowledge would be helpful, but not required; team uses Cursor and Copilot to build code • HM anticipates 2-3 rounds of interviews

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR • Within Reliability Engineering, our goal is to deliver technical solutions to complex production issues by reducing incident and problem toil, improving detection and recovery of critical events through strong observability, and driving continuous operational improvement. • This includes advancing Chaos Engineering practices to validate system resilience, and strengthening high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) capabilities across the services we support.
WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON • The following are a High Availability Engineer's responsibility for this role but is not limited to: • Design and build solutions to provide capabilities for chaos engineering exercises to expose weaknesses in production systems, uncover any gaps in monitoring and observability, and put in place solutions to lower the effects of any failures on consumers • Partner with infrastructure and application engineering teams to ensure solutions meet high availability/disaster recovery requirements, including gap identification, assessment, and remediation • Assess current disaster recovery strategy, impacts, and risks including business, legal, and IT perspectives • Propose various application design patterns and develop disaster recovery scenarios/resilience requirements • Act as a subject matter expert to system owners on industry standards and best practices for disaster recovery • Lead technical recovery efforts in the event of a site outage
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH • Collaborate with and consult Architecture, Security, Privacy, and other subject matter experts within • Act as the subject matter expert for resilience and high availability of consumer facing (e-commerce) systems/applications • Communicate to leadership the status of recovery time (RTO), recovery point objectives (RPO) for critical systems
WHAT YOU BRING • Ability to lead assessments of applications and infrastructure components to identify gaps related to high availability/disaster recovery • 7 years of software development experience • 3 - 5 years' experience in building cloud-based enterprise systems, ideally on AWS • Proficient in Java 11 and newer • Proficient with JavaScript on frontend (React, Angular, etc.) and backend (Node.js) components • Demonstrable knowledge of Linux operating system internals, TCP/IP, filesystems, disk/storage technologies • Basic understanding of DNS, Networking, Virtualization • Experience with Docker and/or serverless patterns • Expertise in designing and building scalable Micro Services • Expertise in web and web-app patterns • Expertise in NoSQL datastore systems to build highly scalable solutions • Experience with expertise in other modern enterprise languages (functional or other - Python, Golang, etc.) • Experience with securing Restful APIs and Apps using OAuth and OpenID Connect and JWT • Good understanding of async/non-blocking Restful APIs approaches and frameworks • Experience within messaging (pub-sub) patterns • Demonstrated negotiation and influencing skills • Basic understanding of most of the following: ServiceNow, Jira, Jenkins, GitHub, Splunk, Grafana or equivalent Application Performance Monitoring Tool
Education: • Requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or a related field; MB plus. Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience.
