Overview GovCIO is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to take charge of and enhance core backend services for a secure and event-driven digital intake and processing platform. This role offers the flexibility of remote work. Responsibilities Core Responsibilities Design, implement, and maintain backend services using a modern TypeScript/Node.js ecosystem. Develop and refine event-driven pipelines, task orchestration, and asynchronous workflows. Manage relational data modeling and migrations with PostgreSQL, ensuring efficient schema management. Build durable APIs (REST and WebSocket) that feature clear versioning and maintain backward compatibility. Implement security protocols, authentication, and authorization suitable for regulated environments. Collaborate with frontend teams, DevOps, and product stakeholders to translate requirements into effective backend solutions. Establish and maintain engineering standards regarding testing (unit, integration, BDD), code quality, and documentation. Identify and troubleshoot production issues, including performance bottlenecks and data integrity concerns. Senior-Level Expectations Independently scope, design, and deliver complex backend features with little oversight. Make informed architectural decisions and communicate trade-offs effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Anticipate potential failure modes and design systems that can degrade gracefully. Proactively identify technical debt and propose practical remediation strategies. Mentor mid-level engineers to enhance the overall backend engineering team. Comfortably navigate environments that require compliance, auditability, and security measures. Qualifications Required Skills and Experience Bachelor's Degree and 12+ years of relevant experience. 10+ years in backend engineering for production systems. Strong expertise in relational databases and transactional data modeling. Experience designing event-driven or workflow-oriented systems. Deep knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and production operations. Prior experience in regulated or high-assurance environments (e.g., government, finance, healthcare) is highly desirable. Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js. Familiarity with modular service architecture, Jest (for unit/BDD testing), and Drizzle ORM. Experience with PostgreSQL including schema migrations and transactional workflows. Knowledge in architecture involving event-driven pipelines, background workers, and task queues. Experience with Docker, GitHub Actions CI/CD, and AWS services (EC2, SSM, ECR, IAM, S3, Route53). Understanding of authentication systems, including Keycloak and JWT-based methods. Familiarity with observability tools, structured logging, metrics, and operational diagnostics. Clearance Required:

Posted Salary Range The salary range for this position starts at USD $140,000.00 and can go up to USD $160,000.00 per year. The finalized compensation will vary depending on individual factors such as market location, experience, skills, and education, as well as internal equity.
