- Join our dedicated team at Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, where we prioritize safety and excellence in crane operations. Job Purpose:
We are seeking a skilled Mobile Crane Operator to support our operations in Norfolk, VA. Key Responsibilities: Safely operate mobile and hydraulic portal cranes, as well as overhead cranes. Train to operate friction cranes and other specialized equipment. Efficiently lift, move, and position various loads, including machinery and bulk materials, using appropriate hoisting attachments. Assist in ship repairs while holding employees in the basket during operations. Ensure load safety by observing hookup procedures and determining load safety prior to lifting. Control crane operations through pedals, levers, and buttons, following instructions accurately. Inspect cranes for defects and report malfunctions to supervisors. Review work and loading instructions daily. Measure load weights and ensure they do not exceed lifting capacities. Use hand and arm signals for safe material handling. Board ships using stairs, ladders, and gangways with necessary tools and equipment. Manage costs effectively within your assigned area. Other rigging duties may be assigned as needed based on workload. Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of five years of industrial crane operating experience and three years of experience in rigging. NCCCO mobile crane certification is mandatory. Proven knowledge of hand tools and instruments related to crane operations. Willingness to operate various crane types, including 60T-110T mobiles and RT mobile cranes. Strong depth perception and comfort working at heights. A collaborative spirit and ability to work well with team members. Understanding of crane maintenance and repair procedures. Ability to interpret technical instructions and specifications. Proficiency in using measuring instruments. Ability to work independently to fulfill responsibilities. Reliable attendance is essential. Desired Qualifications: Experience operating a 230T Manitowoc crane is preferred. Familiarity with overhead crane operation is advantageous. Technical training is a plus. Travel Requirements:
Minimal travel, approximately 10% or less. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment, with some weights being no less than 20 lbs. Physical agility is required to perform tasks on naval ships, including climbing ladders and moving in confined spaces. May involve spending extended periods at sea during ship operations. Be prepared to work in varied environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, and noise. Frequent exposure to machinery noise. Operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts as part of the duties. Commonly required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands; tasks may include climbing, kneeling, and twisting. Ability to work in extreme temperatures and ventilation conditions. Frequent use of personal protective equipment, including respirators. Our Values:
