Location:
San Francisco, CA Work Type:
In-person Employment Type:
Full-Time Salary Range:
$170,000 - $220,000 per year Visa Sponsorship:
None (H1B transfer and OPT OK) About the Role
We are building AI agents for customs brokers and the logistics industry, streamlining workflows in a traditionally manual, document-heavy market. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the core data infrastructure powering an AI-driven logistics platform. This is a high-ownership, zero-to-one role where you will design and scale systems that ingest, process, and serve real-time logistics data across AI pipelines, queues, databases, and search layers.
You will collaborate directly with founders, set technical direction for the backend, and have significant autonomy and impact on product reliability and performance from day one. Responsibilities Architect and scale distributed backend systems, queues, communication hubs, and observability layers. Build for failure with retry strategies, circuit breakers, and graceful degradation. Own database design and reliability, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and data pipelines. Build AI search infrastructure for real-time logistics lookup and AI-driven features. Define service boundaries and set engineering standards for the backend. Collaborate with founders on roadmap and technical direction. Help hire and mentor future backend engineers as the team grows. Must-Have Qualifications 4-6 years of professional backend software engineering experience. Experience in high-growth startups or high-scale production environments. Proven ability to own and ship backend systems end-to-end in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. Strong architectural decision-making under time pressure. Real startup experience (10+ person company), not just big tech. Self-starter who takes ownership of problems, not just code. Based in SF or willing to relocate (in-person required). Nice-to-Have Qualifications Experience with distributed systems, message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS), and event-driven architectures. Familiarity with AI/ML pipelines or document processing at scale. Experience with enterprise software requirements - security, data retention, privacy, compliance. Experience with search infrastructure (Elasticsearch, pgvector). Background at high-growth Series A/B startups or as a founding engineer. Logistics, customs, or regulated industry software experience. Top 50 university background (preferred). What This Role Is NOT For Those who need large team structures or extensive documentation to be productive. Engineers who prefer isolated, single-component work. Individuals uncomfortable with ambiguity and rapid pivots in early-stage startups. Success Metrics System Reliability:
Maintain high uptime and low error rates under production load. Throughput & Latency:
Ensure pipelines and queries meet SLAs as data volumes grow. Architectural Quality:
Build extensible, well-documented systems. Velocity:
Deliver new backend capabilities within sprint cycles without sacrificing quality. Autonomy:
Resolve technical blockers independently and escalate appropriately. Why Join High-growth startup at the right inflection point (~9x revenue growth in 8 months). Direct mentorship from founders (ex-Google, ex-LinkedIn). Full end-to-end ownership from day one - no bureaucracy. Work on challenging distributed systems problems at the intersection of AI and global trade. Equity-first culture: 0.2-0.5%.
