Position Summary

The Manager of Software Integration provides hands-on leadership for the university’s software systems and development initiatives. This role blends strategic thinking, technical expertise, and collaborative service to support academic, administrative, and student-facing systems. This position requires both team leadership and direct technical contribution. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable writing code, guiding architectural decisions, mentoring developers, and working closely with stakeholders across campus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of developers, fostering a culture of collaboration, growth, and high-quality technical delivery.
  • Manage system design and architectural decisions, project pipelines, priorities, and timelines using Waterfall, Agile or hybrid methodologies.
  • Partner enterprise-wide with key Stakeholders to understand needs and translate them into practical, sustainable technology solutions.
  • Contribute directly to development efforts, including coding, code reviews, and system design.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of IT on strategy, budgeting, and technology roadmaps aligned with MIU’s mission.

Qualifications & Required Technical Skills

  • Java Proficiency:
    • Extensive experience with Java, including advanced features, best practices, and performance optimization.
  • Spring Framework Expertise:
    • In-depth knowledge of the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot for rapid application development and building RESTful APIs, Spring MVC for web applications, Spring Security for authentication and authorization, and Spring Data JPA for database interaction.
  • Front-end Technologies:
    • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript frameworks.
  • Object-Oriented Design (OOD):
    • Strong understanding and practical application of OOD principles, design patterns and UML Technologies.
  • RESTful APIs and Messaging platforms:
    • Knowledge of tradeoffs of integration technologies, REST APIs, message platforms (e.g. RabbitMQ). Importance of data driven models.
    • Specific experience in designing, developing, and consuming RESTful web
    • services including understanding of related technologies, JSON, Postman, etc.
  • DevOps Practices and Tools:
    • CI/CD: Proficiency in setting up and managing Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines using platforms like Azure DevOps.
    • Version Control: Expert-level proficiency with Git and platforms like GitHub.
  • Monitoring and Observability:
    • Familiarity with tools for monitoring application performance and system health.
  • Database Knowledge:
    • Proficiency with both relational (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Redis), including the ability to write complex queries.
  • Testing:
    • Proficiency in various testing methodologies, including unit testing, integration testing, and automated regression testing.
  • Technical Documentation
    • Provide guidance with a "just enough, just in time" documentation approach (i.e., tradeoff of too much (Waterfall) .vs. too little (Agile).


Strongly Preferred Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • 2+ years of experience leading projects or supervising technical staff.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a service-oriented environment.


Preferred Experience

  • Higher education systems (SIS, LMS, CRM, financial aid systems).
  • ERP integration and data synchronization.
  • Reporting tools and data warehousing concepts.
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems.
  • Familiarity with compliance considerations (FERPA, Data Security, Cybersecurity)

Candidates who reside in or near Fairfield, Iowa are strongly preferred.
