Position Summary
The Applications Engineer is responsible for evaluating customer Requests for Quotation (RFQs) and developing technical concepts, cost estimates, and formal proposals for automated manufacturing systems. This role serves as a critical link between the sales and engineering teams, translating customer requirements into practical automation solutions while ensuring proposals are technically sound, competitive, and aligned with company capabilities.
The Applications Engineer will analyze project requirements, develop system concepts, coordinate with internal engineering teams and vendors, and prepare detailed quotations and proposal documentation for custom automated equipment.
Key Responsibilities
RFQ Review & Technical Evaluation Review and analyze customer RFQs, specifications, drawings, and scope documents. Identify technical requirements, project risks, and areas requiring clarification. Communicate directly with customers to resolve technical questions and refine project scope when necessary. Concept Development
Develop conceptual automation solutions that meet customer requirements while optimizing performance, cost, and manufacturability. Generate preliminary system layouts, process flow diagrams, and equipment concepts. Determine appropriate automation technologies including robotics, vision systems, conveyors, assembly systems, and material handling solutions. Cost Estimating & Quotation Development
Prepare detailed cost estimates including equipment, controls, fabrication, purchased components, and integration labor. Coordinate with internal engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing teams to obtain accurate cost inputs. Solicit and evaluate vendor quotes for major purchased equipment and components. Develop pricing models and compile complete project quotations. Proposal Preparation
Prepare technical proposals including system descriptions, scope of supply, deliverables, and project assumptions. Ensure proposals clearly define the solution, system functionality, and project scope. Support sales in presenting proposals and responding to customer technical inquiries. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with mechanical, controls, and manufacturing engineers to validate concepts and feasibility. Collaborate with project management to ensure proposed solutions align with company execution capabilities. Support project kickoff and knowledge transfer to the engineering team after project award. Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical field. Experience
3-8+ years of experience in industrial automation, special machinery, or automated manufacturing systems. Experience developing concepts and quotes for custom automation equipment. Familiarity with robotics, assembly systems, material handling, or injection molding automation is preferred. Technical Skills
Strong understanding of automated manufacturing systems and machine design. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and customer specifications. Experience with conceptual design tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar). Knowledge of industrial robotics, PLC-based control systems, and machine safety principles. Cost estimating and quotation development experience. Soft Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple RFQs and deadlines simultaneously. Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Fanuc or similar industrial robotics platforms. Familiarity with assembly automation, vision inspection, and material handling systems. Previous experience in a custom machine builder or system integrator environment.
