Locations: Gaithersburg, MD - Eagan, MN - Egg Harbor, NJ Schedule: Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days remote) Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust (U.S. Citizenship required) We are seeking a Junior Software Engineer with AI-enabled development experience to support a large-scale modernization program involving real-time, high-availability, safety-critical systems. This role combines traditional software engineering with emerging AI-augmented development techniques to enhance delivery, code quality, and system performance. This position is ideal for engineers who actively apply AI in their day-to-day workflow and want to contribute to a mission-critical, complex engineering environment. What You'll Do Design, develop, test, and maintain software for real-time, high-availability systems. Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, refactoring, debugging, and automated test generation. Apply responsible AI practices across the full SDLC - requirements, design, implementation, testing, documentation, and code review. Analyze complex system requirements and translate them into efficient, maintainable designs. Develop and maintain automation scripts across development, test, and production environments. Promote code quality, reuse, traceability, and cross-team collaboration. Requirements Required Qualifications AI-Driven Engineering Experience We are specifically seeking engineers who integrate AI into their daily workflow. Hands-on experience with: AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar) for: Code generation and refactoring Debugging and automated test creation IDE-integrated AI workflows Large language model platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, etc.) Writing effective prompts and validating AI-generated output Human-in-the-loop development practices Evaluating AI output for correctness, performance, safety, and bias Incorporating AI/ML techniques into software engineering processes Automated testing frameworks Core Technical Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 4-8 years of experience OR Master's degree with 2-6 years of experience Strong object-oriented programming experience Proficiency in C, C++, and/or Ada (Ada preferred but not required) Experience developing real-time, multi-threaded systems Familiarity with Linux (Red Hat), virtual machines, and hypervisors Experience with low-level communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, SCTP) Experience with hardware or complex system integration Experience with source control and configuration management tools Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance U.S. Citizenship required Additional Role Expectations Work independently on moderately complex tasks with moderate impact on the project team. Address technical issues using internal best practices and team collaboration. Communicate effectively with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders. Apply standard engineering principles, processes, and tools across the software development life cycle.
