Your Role: Tax Expert

Are you a tax aficionado with a knack for navigating complex international financial landscapes? We’re on the lookout for a dedicated Tax Expert to oversee and manage tax-related activities within Fortnum & Mason Plc (F&M). In this pivotal role, you will:

  • Provide strategic tax planning and ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
  • Minimize tax-related risks while collaborating with our international trade compliance, data, technical, finance, and reporting teams.
  • Lead indirect tax reporting and compliance efforts both in the UK and overseas.
  • Support our tax advisors with corporate tax compliance tasks.
Key Accountabilities

As our Tax Expert, you will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining the tax risk register and reviewing high-risk areas at least once a year.
  • Preparing and monitoring the tax reporting calendar.
  • Handling VAT, GST, and sales tax reporting.
  • Providing internal training and guidance on various aspects of direct and indirect taxes.
  • Ensuring corporation tax compliance and reporting, including capital and R&D allowances.
  • Collaborating closely with tax advisors to address historic and future risks.
What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications:

  • Exceptional VAT technical and analytical skills.
  • Strong judgment and risk management abilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Resilience and the ability to meet deadlines with good self-organization.
  • Proficient Excel skills for analyzing and interpreting large volumes of data.
  • Experience working with tax authorities and external tax advisors.
  • A keen interest in technology and innovation.
  • Ambition and a strong desire to succeed.
  • 5-7 years of experience in tax accounting or management, with some supervisory experience.
  • Relevant tax or accounting qualification (CTA, ATT, AAT, ACCA, CIMA, etc.).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of international indirect taxes (GST, sales/use tax for distance selling).
  • Understanding of complex VAT treatment of food, mixed supply, and antique sales.
  • Experience with ERP systems, ideally Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Familiarity with tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex).
  • Background in retail.
