The Opportunity — Senior Chemist, Colour R&D

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative scientist to join the Colour R&D team. Your technical and communication skills will enable you to deliver technical solutions, build trust with clients, and increase customer satisfaction through the successful completion of key projects.

Using your strengths in problem solving, training, and analysis, the ideal candidate will effectively translate technical innovation into commercially viable solutions for global markets.


Your portfolio will focus on the formulation, optimization, and scale-up of pigment dispersions and colourant systems used in waterborne and solvent-borne applications. The role ensures technical excellence, manufacturing robustness, cost efficiency, and performance consistency while supporting new product development and customer technical requirements.


Primary Responsibilities:

Formulation & Development

  • Develop and optimize pigment dispersions and colourant formulations for coatings and related applications.
  • Develop new colourants, tinting systems, or high-performance dispersions with low VOC, environmentally responsible, and regulatory-compliant profiles.
  • Select appropriate dispersants, wetting agents, resins, and additives based on pigment chemistry and end-use requirements.
  • Improve dispersion efficiency, stability, viscosity control, and colour strength.
  • Analyze and interpret data and prepare technical reports.


Process & Scale-Up

  • Translate laboratory formulations to pilot and production scale.
  • Optimize milling parameters (e.g., high-speed disperser, basket mill).
  •  Troubleshoot production, primarily focused on development projects but not limited to production batches but

  • Raw Material & Cost Optimization

    • Evaluate new dispersants, resins, and additives from suppliers.
    • Reduce formulation costs without compromising performance.
    • Standardize raw material usage across product lines.


    Customer & Field - Technical Support

    • Travel to customer sites to support trials and troubleshooting.
    • Support the sales team during technical presentations and product approvals.
    • Prepare field visit reports and follow-up action plans.


    Quality, Environmental & Safety Compliance

    • Comply with the requirements of the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
    • Consider environmental aspects and impacts during the design of products and services.


    • Follow applicable SOPs, work instructions, and control procedures.
    • Maintain accurate technical records in accordance with quality and safety programs.
    • Promote awareness of health and safety hazards and safe work practices within areas of responsibility.

    Qualifications

    • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
    •  5–10+ years’ experience in formulating colourants, dispersions, coatings, or inks.

    Core Competencies

    • Strong knowledge of pigment chemistry, dispersants, rheology control, milling, and dispersion theory.
    • Understanding of waterborne and solvent-borne systems.
    • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capability.
    • Data-driven, detail-oriented, and documentation focused.
    • Proficient computer skills (Access, Word, Excel, Outlook).
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
