Position Summary: NICTD is seeking a skilled and experienced Network/Systems Administrator to join our Positive Train Control (PTC) team. This position supports mission-critical systems that directly impact train operations and dispatch functionality. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background and a passion for managing Network and systems. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a customer-focused approach.
Description: Network System Administrator for PTC duties include the following:
Administers, troubleshoots, and maintains Positive Train Control System, Train Network System, Substation SCADA System, Fiber Optic Communications System.
Oversee and assist with the proper licensing and support for the Network and Systems
Oversee and assist with the renewal of certificates in the PTC System.
Oversee and assist with network maintenance and patching of network equipment.
Assist with the management of the PTC system backups.
Administers system warranty and technical support programs provided by system suppliers.
Recommends, develops and administers corrective and preventative maintenance for hardware and software and schedules work to implement accordingly.
Assure adequate supply of capital spares.
Manage as–in-services drawings and records.
Follow change management processes for system modifications and upgrades.
Perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades outside of normal business hours to minimize downtime and ensure system availability.
Backup to the PTC Server/System Administrator.
Performs other duties as directed by the Manager of PTC Engineering
Implement and enforce security policies and procedures.
Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.
Respond to security incidents and implement corrective actions.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s/associate degree in network technology, network management, computer science, or a related field.
3+ years of experience in Network and systems administration.
Basic Proficiency in Microsoft Office products as well as generic computer and keyboarding skills.
Knowledge of windows-based Root Certificate Authority (CA) management.
Knowledge of Cisco firewalls, routers, switches and ISE system.
Knowledge of interoperable secure tunnels, IPsec VPN tunneling.
Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).
Experience with VEEAM, Active Directory, SQL, Remote Desktop Gateway, and Network Management Tools (NICTD uses What’s Up Gold).
Knowledge of private network WLAN configuration, preferably with Hitachi Tropos equipment.
Configuration Management, Inventory Control and equipment record keeping.
Superior record concerning safety, attitude, attendance, and work.
Cyber Security knowledge.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work and communicate effectively in highly stressful conditions.
Strong attention to detail.
Reliable transportation to and from Michigan City.
Preferred Qualifications:
Cisco certified (CCNA) or equivalent experience in Cisco.
Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or relevant Microsoft certifications.
Experience with scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation and system administration.
Familiarity with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure)

The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Schedule: The anticipated normal work hours are during the daytime Monday through Friday. NICTD Maintenance and Support window is from 11pm to 3am weekdays and 11:00pm to 4:30am on the weekends. The specific work schedule will depend on the needs of the District and managerial availability. The successful applicant will be expected to be available for support calls during the night, evening, and weekend from other managers, supervisors, and network center personnel.
Supervision: The position reports to the Manager, PTC Engineering.
Salary and Benefits: The salary will be set based on skills, experience, and consistent with pay structure for others in comparable assignments. Health care, dental care, vacation, holidays, supplemental pension plan, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, and comp time are some of the benefits available. Credit for time served in other railroad employment, including approved military leaves, will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements. Relocation benefits are not available.
