Job Description:
The Laboratory Systems Administrator ensures the reliability, performance, and regulatory compliance of the LIS and its integrations. As the organization's technical expert for lab applications, this role manages system configuration, maintains instrument and EHR connectivity, and provides advanced troubleshooting and on-call support to minimize downtime. The administrator attends training as directed; collaborates with laboratory leadership, clinicians, IT teams, and vendors; and works with department directors, staff, and physicians to develop efficient, standardized workflows. They also guide daily project implementation activities and lead upgrades, testing, documentation, and training. Through continuous optimization, the role enhances laboratory efficiency, data accuracy, and patient safety.
Minimum Qualifications • Education RN, BSN, MSN or Bachelors degree in another healthcare profession or equivalent experience required. OR Bachelor degree from a NAACLS accredited medical technology education program or Bachelor degree in Information Technology field or five years of clinical laboratory experience required. Minimum of two years as a LIS administrator or assistant LIS administrator preferred. • Credentials MLS/MLT Certification Work Environment Sitting for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computing equipment. Physical Demands 1. Sit frequently. 2. Stand and/or walk frequently. 3. Lift 25 pounds occasionally. 4. Push and/or pull 25-50 pounds frequently. 5. Carry 25 pounds 100 feet occasionally.
Essential Functions
1. The Laboratory Systems Administrator ensures the Lab Information System(s) (LIS) are stable, fully functional, and kept current with organizational, vendor, and regulatory requirements. They monitor performance, identify issues early, and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime and safeguard patient care.
2. The administrator manages LIS interoperability by configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting interfaces with other clinical systems, including the EHR and ancillary applications. They ensure laboratory orders, results, and instrument data are transmitted accurately, securely, and on time using established standards such as HL7.
3. The administrator maintains reliable connectivity between the LIS and laboratory instruments, middleware, automation systems, and related equipment. They troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues that affect lab workflows or the transmission of instrument results.
4. The administrator oversees LIS configuration by building and updating test codes, specimen types, workflow rules, reference ranges, QC parameters, and other dictionary and master-file elements. All changes follow formal change-control procedures and comply with CAP, CLIA, CMS, and internal standards.
5. As a Tier-2 support resource, the administrator provides advanced troubleshooting and participates in 24/7 on-call coverage. They serve as the primary escalation point for complex LIS issues requiring timely resolution to maintain uninterrupted laboratory operations.
6. The administrator coordinates LIS upgrades, patches, enhancements, and related projects. They manage planning, testing, validation, and implementation while collaborating with IT teams, laboratory leadership, and vendors to meet technical requirements and timelines.
7. The administrator maintains thorough documentation of configurations, workflows, troubleshooting procedures, and system changes. They also train and cross-train IT staff and laboratory personnel to ensure consistent knowledge and proper system use.
8. The administrator safeguards patient data by adhering to HIPAA, organizational security policies, and best practices for data integrity and access control. They support cybersecurity assessments, risk mitigation efforts, and audit preparations.
9. The administrator works closely with laboratory management, clinicians, pathologists, nursing, and IT teams to maintain effective communication and operational alignment. They provide clear updates on system performance, upcoming changes, and issue resolution. The administrator stays current on system capabilities, vendor updates, interoperability standards, and best practices and ensures the LIS integrates smoothly with the enterprise EHR and supports downstream clinical workflows.
10. The administrator contributes to process improvement and organizational change efforts by evaluating workflows, participating in optimization initiatives, and promoting technology solutions that enhance efficiency, quality, and patient safety.
