Machine Learning Engineer
on our Risk AI/ML team, you will play a crucial role in developing sophisticated models that protect our users, making Coinbase a trusted platform in the crypto space. Your contributions will directly combat fraud, account takeovers, and scams while enabling new features like instant guest checkout and Coinbase Cards. This hands-on role will empower you to utilize our advanced self-service ML platform to creatively design, deploy, and refine models that safeguard millions of users. Key Responsibilities: Model Development:
Lead the end-to-end creation of ML models, from conception to production, using our centralized, self-service ML platform.
Enhance Model Performance:
Collaborate within a high-priority team to improve essential models, including Scam Models, Transfer/Transaction Risk Models, Withdrawal Limit Models, and Account Takeover models.
Respond to Threats Swiftly:
Quickly act on new threat data identified by our Risk Operations partners to develop and implement permanent ML models, aiming for a production deployment timeline of under one week.
Build Scalable Models:
Create production-quality AI/ML models and pipelines that ensure reliable, real-time predictions, utilizing automated CI/CD pipelines and a centralized feature store.
Employ Advanced ML Techniques:
Utilize modern methods, such as deep learning, NLP, Graph Neural Networks, and sequence modeling, to tackle intricate crypto-specific challenges, focusing solely on modeling.
Develop Context-Aware Risk Systems:
Help establish adaptive logic that determines the appropriate level of user friction based on their profile and risk factors, ensuring a balance between security and user experience.
Collaborate Effectively:
Work closely with stakeholders from Risk Operations, Platform Engineering, and Product Management to turn new threats into automated protective measures.
Your Qualifications: 2+ years of experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, with proven expertise in deploying AI/ML systems.
A commitment to fostering an open financial system alongside a strong desire to defend users from fraud and scams. You embody our cultural values: positivity, clear communication, curiosity, and a builder's mindset.
Familiar with applied AI/ML techniques such as Risk ML, deep learning, NLP, and anomaly detection.
Strong programming skills (e.g., Python) with experience in AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch). Background in building backend systems focused on data processing or analytics is advantageous.
Ability to collaborate on technical projects and contribute to impactful AI/ML solutions.
Excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or related field.
Familiarity with modern data and AI/ML infrastructure tools (e.g., Tecton, RayServe, Apache Airflow, Spark, Kafka).
Experience with Graph Neural Networks or Sequential Models (like LSTMs).
Knowledge of LLMs or Reinforcement Learning.
Understanding of MLOps best practices, including the monitoring and enhancement of production models.
Experience with data analysis and visualization tools.

The target annual base salary for this role ranges between $161,500 and $190,000 USD, depending on your location. Full-time offers at Coinbase also include bonus and equity eligibility along with comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
