As part of the Risk Engineering Platform team at Coinbase, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding our platform and protecting millions of users from fraud and financial risks. We are dedicated to creating flexible, scalable, and innovative engineering solutions to detect and prevent fraud in real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled workflows. Our goal is to support business growth by effectively managing financial risks while ensuring the best possible user experience. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Risk Engineering team, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership on comprehensive projects, influencing architectural decisions, and developing risk detection and mitigation systems. You will lead complex projects from inception to production, mentor junior engineers, and set high technical standards that elevate the team's capabilities. Your contributions will have a direct impact on millions of users and billions in transaction volume. Responsibilities: Technical Leadership & Delivery Author, review, and approve technical design documents for complex features and systems. Lead technical initiatives for the delivery of end-to-end projects, including implementation, deployment, and monitoring. Design, scope, and significantly contribute to the development of new systems and features based on experience-based judgment. Oversee multiple projects from inception to completion, regardless of size or complexity. Facilitate team activities including on-call rotations, code reviews, and incident response. Transform high-level intentions and ambiguous business requirements into effective architectures. System Architecture & Quality Proactively enhance code quality and address technical debt within the team's codebases. Identify, propose, and implement scalable solutions that benefit the team. Develop systems or features that improve the team's ability to deliver high-quality work. Address significant debt and quality issues while maintaining existing systems. Lead troubleshooting, bug triaging, and performance/scalability enhancements. Ensure solutions are practical for teams both within and outside your function. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing Support, coach, and mentor junior engineers within your team. Share your expertise with others, amplifying the impact of your skills. Improve efficiency for fellow engineers through guidance and best practices. Take ownership of unassigned or less-desired tasks that speed up team progress. Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Product Managers to prioritize effectively. What We Are Looking For: Required Qualifications: Over 5 years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of delivering complex systems. Ability to lead technical projects and mentor fellow engineers. Strong expertise in at least one frontend framework (React, TypeScript). Experience in building and scaling distributed systems in production. Solid understanding of system design, architecture patterns, and relevant trade-offs. Proficient in managing ambiguous requirements and driving technical clarity. Experience in leading incident responses and conducting post-mortem analyses. Preferred Qualifications: Background in risk management, fraud detection, or large-scale financial systems. Familiarity with machine learning models in production. Experience in real-time event processing and streaming architectures such as Kafka or Flink. Understanding of payment systems (ACH, cards, crypto) and related fraud patterns. Knowledge of regulatory compliance and security requirements. Proven history of enhancing team productivity through improved tooling and processes. Technical Skills: Frontend Engineers Should Have: Expert-level proficiency in React and TypeScript/JavaScript. In-depth understanding of modern frontend architectures and performance optimization. Experience with state management solutions and component design systems. Strong knowledge of web security best practices and accessibility standards. Experience developing complex, data-rich user interfaces. History of improving frontend developer experience and tooling. Pay Transparency Notice:
Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position ranges from $186,065 to $218,900 USD. Full-time offers from Coinbase also include bonus eligibility, equity, and benefits (such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)). Commitment to Equal Opportunity:
