Empire Life is looking to hire two Bilingual Underwriting Trainees to join our Retail Underwriting team!
This is an ideal role for someone passionate about launching a long-term career in the world of underwriting . As a trainee, you will learn the \"ins and outs\" of the insurance industry through a blend of self-study and hands-on experience, providing a foundation that will allow you to grow and thrive in this specialized field. You will be actively involved in the underwriting process from day one—analyzing medical history, financials, and other risk factors to make sound decisions on live cases.
The selected candidates will work under the moderate supervision of the Manager, Underwriting, transitioning from hands on learning to more independent risk assessment by the end of the program. The total target compensation (TTC) range, including salary and target bonus, is $47,700 - $84,800 This TTC range is applicable to permanent roles only; fixed-term contract and casual roles are not eligible for annual bonus and would receive only the base salary component.

What you’ll be working on
- Completes basic risk assessments of individual life insurance applications
- Demonstrates a willingness and eagerness to learn in order to ensure successful development of key underwriting skills and abilities
- Provides basic risk assessments and related support to Empire Life and to the Retail New Business Operations unit
- Participates in the basic risk assessment of individual life insurance applications
- Support and provide a high level of customer service to our customers and distribution partners via telephone and email
- Performs underwriting tasks such as screening applications, assisting in obtaining underwriting requirements and making basic underwriting decisions within an established decision framework
- Involved in active on-the-job training
- Works to complete specific industry courses
What we’re looking for you to have
- 1-3 years work experience in a professional environment
- Experience providing services to and interacting with clients
- Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet and database computer software
- Bilingualism (English/French) required
- Working towards completion of ALU 1 and UND 386 considered an asset
- Completion of a post secondary education is required
- Good analytical, decision-making and problem solving skills
- Good organizational skills
- Clear writing, listening and verbal communication skills
- Well-developed customer relations skills
- Well-developed communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
