*Position Summary*
The Machining Value Stream Team Leader is a critical operational leadership role responsible for driving the performance, efficiency, quality, and cultural excellence of one or more aerospace manufacturing value streams. Reporting directly to the Value Stream Manager, this role leads day-to-day operations while executing the organization’s Lean enterprise system and Win Strategy to ensure world-class performance in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and people development.
This leader champions a safe and compliant aerospace manufacturing environment, ensures continuous product flow, improves customer responsiveness, reduces operating costs and inventories, and shortens lead times through structured continuous improvement initiatives. The role is accountable for associate development, employment decisions, and performance management within the assigned value stream(s), while fostering a culture of empowerment, accountability, and operational excellence aligned with aerospace regulatory and quality standards.
*Core Leadership Responsibilities*
*Operational Leadership & Value Stream Execution*
* Lead daily operations of assigned aerospace machining value stream(s), ensuring achievement of daily, monthly, and annual performance targets.
* Manage multi-shift CNC machining operations including mills, lathes, drills, and multi-axis platforms.
* Oversee production scheduling, prioritization, and execution while balancing capacity, demand variability, and program requirements.
* Demonstrate strong understanding of run-time estimation, machining complexity, and production sequencing to optimize workflow.
* Determine optimal inventory strategies including buffers, supermarkets, and WIP positioning to maintain flow without excess.
* Optimize setups, reduce changeover times, and align production to takt time expectations.
* Ensure seamless coordination between operators, programmers, Manufacturing Engineering, and supply chain.
*Lean Enterprise & Continuous Improvement Leadership*
* Implement and sustain Lean principles, structured problem-solving, and waste elimination methodologies across the value stream.
* Lead regular value stream meetings focused on operational performance, root cause analysis, and solution deployment.
* Utilize PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) methodology in conjunction with Tracking Centers and Team Improvement Boards to drive measurable improvements.
* Develop and maintain standardized work documentation and ensure adherence to established processes.
* Foster a culture of employee empowerment where associates are encouraged to identify issues and stop processes to correct problems at the source.
* Support the development and execution of the future state value stream map and manage progress toward its achievement.
* Create and maintain a visually controlled manufacturing environment where performance metrics, improvement initiatives, and abnormalities are clearly visible and addressed in real time.
*Advanced CNC Technical Leadership*
* Provide hands-on technical oversight of 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machining centers, turning centers, and advanced CNC equipment.
* Ideally possess familiarity with *Mazak machining platforms* and comparable high-performance CNC systems.
* Demonstrate strong understanding of: Tooling strategies (perishable tooling vs. live tooling vs. carbide solutions), Quick-change tooling systems, Tool life optimization, Cutting parameters and speeds/feeds optimization, Fixturing concepts and workholding strategies
* Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to refine machining processes, reduce waste, and improve part consistency.
* Analyze machining difficulty, material behavior, and part geometry to proactively identify risk areas.
* Maintain capability to review and discuss CNC programming logic, background codes (G/M codes), and program structure.
* Working knowledge of drafting software and ability to interpret part models and program intent.
*Safety, Compliance & Aerospace Regulatory Adherence*
* Promote and enforce a zero-incident safety culture within the value stream.
* Ensure compliance with aerospace manufacturing standards, specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements (including FAA and applicable governmental standards).
* Maintain strict adherence to 5S standards and workplace organization principles.
* Ensure manufacturing and quality systems comply with industry-specific requirements and internal quality management systems.
*Quality & Customer Excellence*
* Drive “right-first-time” manufacturing through robust quality discipline and problem containment.
* Lead cross-functional coordination to resolve quality escapes, customer complaints, and non-conformance trends.
* Promote proactive quality improvement initiatives to reduce defects, scrap, and rework.
* Ensure rapid implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
* Maintain focus on premier customer service by aligning operational priorities with external and internal customer requirements.
*Workforce Development & Talent Leadership*
* Directly supervise Group Leaders and value stream associates within assigned areas.
* Conduct performance assessments, coaching discussions, and employment-related decisions in alignment with company policies.
* Develop and implement cross-training programs to ensure workforce flexibility and operational continuity.
* Assess individual and team capability gaps and create development plans to strengthen technical and leadership competencies.
* Promote collaboration, accountability, and engagement across shifts and functions.
* Serve as a role model for integrity, innovation, positive change, and continuous learning.
*Financial & Performance Accountability*
* Support budget development and ensure disciplined adherence to approved financial plans.
* Drive cost reduction initiatives targeting labor efficiency, scrap reduction, inventory optimization, and improved throughput.
* Monitor and manage KPIs including safety, quality, delivery, inventory turns, productivity, and cost metrics.
* Collaborate with operations leadership to achieve year-over-year operational performance improvements.
*Qualifications & Experience*
* Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations Management, Business, or related technical discipline.
* Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in aerospace or precision manufacturing operations with demonstrated leadership capability.
* Extensive hands-on knowledge of: 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machining centers, CNC turning centers, Swiss-type lathes, Precision grinding operations, Horizontal and vertical machining platforms.
* Familiarity with *Mazak machining platforms* or equivalent high-performance CNC systems strongly preferred
* Strong working knowledge of: Tooling systems (perishable tooling, live tooling, carbide tooling solutions), Quick-change tooling systems, Fixturing concepts and workholding strategies, Cutting parameters (feeds and speeds optimization), Tool life optimization and cost-performance balancing, Setup reduction and SMED principles
* Experience supporting major aerospace OEMs such as: Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Technologies & General Electric etc.
* Strong practical knowledge of machining processes, aerospace components, production planning systems (MRP/ERP), and operational reporting tools.
* Deep working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles including: Value Stream Mapping (current and future state), Continuous flow implementation, Pull systems and Kanban, Standardized work development, 5S and visual factory systems, Root cause analysis (5 Why, Fishbone, A3) & PDCA methodology
* Working knowledge of manufacturing specifications, regulatory compliance requirements (including FAA standards), and safety regulations.
* Demonstrated experience leading teams in high-performance, regulated manufacturing environments.
* Proven ability to deliver measurable operational results in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
