Golf Course Superintendent
New England Country Club
New England Country Club is an 18-hole daily fee golf course located on the Rhode Island state line in
Bellingham, MA. The facility is privately owned by a local family and plays host to 30,000 rounds and
has a maintenance budget of $998, ). There has been a golf course on this site since 1901 (9-
holes). The most recent redesign was by Hale Irwin (late 1990’s). Patrons of New England Country
Club enjoy access to our 5+ acre practice facility that includes a all-grass tee, putting green, short game
area and practice bunkers. There are plans for future development that could involve the relocation of a
golf hole and always maintaining an 18-hole course here. The golf course sits on a parcel of land that is
over 200 acres. The total property is spaced out over almost 300 acres.
The golf course superintendent executes details related to all golf course maintenance to ensure the best
customer experience. The responsibilities include:
Turf grass/plant material maintenance programs
Property/asset management
Personnel management
Budget/forecasting and financial management
Irrigation system maintenance
Pesticide/herbicide applications (related recordings and compliance of regulatory issues)
Creating an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and
respect for themselves, customers, and the property
Basic Functions:
Responsible for all phases of golf maintenance, agronomic operations, cost control, and
personnel
Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Director of Golf on any issues related to
golf course maintenance
Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds.
Designs landscape plans for facility grounds and implements the plan
Administers and enforces all facility rules, regulations, and policies for staff
Works closely with the GM/Director of Golf to operate the facility in a fiscally responsible and
professional manner
Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver
Primary Duties:
Manages the condition of the golf course, including the perimeters, water channels, streams and
ponds
Creates a cultural program to manage turf health, function of the irrigation system, and follows
applicable laws to apply pesticides
Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems and provides monthly
reporting on retaining ponds, wells, and other water source usage
Recruits, supervises, and retains maintenance staff; conducting employee performance
evaluations and exercises disciplinary action
Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working
within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power
equipment while planning and budgeting for additional or replacement capital equipment
Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers
and pesticides) on the club's grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with maintenance operations
including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers
Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects
Schedules maintenance practices around golf course events to maximize efficiency and
revenues.
Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities when necessary
Attend weekly club management meetings
Physical Demands:
Ability to perform the physical requirements such as standing or sitting for periods of time for up
to ten (10) to twelve (12) consecutive hours
Ability to perform walking, bending, lifting, carrying, moving and lifting up to 50 pounds (for
example, lifting and moving tables, chairs, boxes for extended periods of time)
Ability to freely access all areas of the property
Able to work in extreme hot and cold temperatures for periods of time
Vision must be correctable to be able to read and write
Hearing must be sufficient to understand conversation in a noisy environment
Minimum Qualifications:
3-5 years’ experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or 1st Assistant
2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture,
plant science, soil science)
Computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations
Valid Driver's License
Experience with course “grow-in” or hole renovation/relocation a plus
Experience working at a golf course community a plus
Pesticide Application License
Prefer Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
Benefits:
Salary Range $90,000 to $115,000 depending on experience
