Areeva Solutions is hiring a Senior Platform Architect (Product & Platform Technical Advisor) to provide technical direction for modernization efforts at Federal Student Aid (FSA). This role requires deep software engineering experience and technical thought leadership across multiple teams supporting a complex ecosystem of systems that serve millions of borrowers and applicants. The ideal candidate is a highly technical, product-minded engineering leader who can engage directly with engineers, architects, and product teams; evaluate tradeoffs; shape architecture decisions; and communicate strategy clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. This is a role for someone with strong hands-on engineering credibility who can define a credible technical future state for FSA’s systems, work alongside existing teams to get there incrementally, and apply modern product and platform engineering practices in a federal environment.
*Key Responsibilities:*
* Provide senior technical leadership across engineering teams and vendors, with a focus on software architecture, strategy, and engineering execution quality.
* Partner with the Program Delivery Manager and engineering teams on all technical aspects of delivery, developing practical modernization approaches, identifying decomposition strategies for legacy systems, and sequencing work to deliver value incrementally.
* Identify technical risks and delivery constraints early; contribute to program-level risk management through engineering-informed analysis and help maintain the program risk register alongside PM and governance teams.
* Lead architecture and design reviews for applications, APIs, data flows, and platform components; provide actionable feedback grounded in modern engineering practices.
* Support requirements traceability by helping teams maintain linkage between program objectives, technical implementation, and test coverage across the RTM.
* Advise leadership on technical decisions (e.g., build vs. buy, platform vs. custom, vendor integration strategy, engineering capability gaps).
* Champion engineering quality through code review culture, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and measurable reliability/performance practices.
* Participate in governance processes (e.g., Change Control Board, Technical Review Board) as the senior engineering voice; help the government team interpret agile and engineering metrics to identify bottlenecks and inform program decisions.
* Support technical continuity across team transitions, including phase-in/phase-out planning, to minimize disruption during contract changes.
* Collaborate with security and compliance stakeholders to ensure systems meet federal cybersecurity and privacy requirements (NIST RMF, MITCR, Section 508), including secure architecture, PII/CUI handling, vulnerability management, and production reliability.
* Partner with product, design, and program teams to ensure engineering aligns with the target-state vision, design system standards, accessibility, and user-centered goals.
* Translate complex technical issues into clear recommendations for leadership; operate effectively as an IC in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment.
*Required Qualifications:*
* 8–10 years in software engineering, with significant time in senior / staff / principal engineer, architect, or technical leadership roles (preferably in federal or large-scale program environments).
* Demonstrated ability to lead technical strategy and engineering decision-making in complex, distributed systems, including evaluating implementation approaches and engaging deeply in design discussions.
* Experience defining target-state architectures and leading incremental modernization of legacy systems, balancing technical ambition with operational risk and delivery constraints.
* Experience with modern development practices, including APIs/microservices, cloud platforms, CI/CD, observability, and secure software delivery.
* Proven ability to collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers in product-based organizations.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
*Preferred Skills:*
* Track record of leading digital modernization in brownfield/legacy environments within government or highly regulated settings. Familiarity with FSA systems, federal student aid processes, or similar mission-critical public service systems is a plus.
* Strong prototyping and development skills, with experience building MVPs, proofs-of-concept, or production-grade features across web, platform, or data systems.
* Deep expertise in software architecture, system integration, and engineering judgment on build vs. buy, platform strategy, technical debt, and scaling engineering organizations.
* Experience designing and delivering secure systems in regulated environments, including privacy, identity, compliance, and familiarity with ATO/security processes and federal technology policies.
* Ability to influence without authority and earn trust across senior engineers, product leaders, vendors, and government stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to improve engineering effectiveness across multiple teams through technical standards, mentoring, and architectural guidance.
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, PMP, TOGAF) preferred, but engineering depth matters more than credentials.
