We are seeking an experienced market researcher to conduct a comprehensive local and national competitor analysis for a proposed modern sit-in coffee shop with a build-your-own salad bar concept in *Location to be confirmed with winning candidate* - North Wales, United Kingdom.
The concept combines specialty coffee, customisable salad bowls, fast counter service, and a strong takeaway focus. The goal of this research is to assess commercial viability, pricing strategy, positioning, market demand, and risk factors before launch.
This project has two key parts:
1. Localised Market Research (Location to be confirmed)
You will analyse all food and beverage establishments within walking distance of the proposed unit location. These businesses do not directly replicate our concept, but they represent the immediate competitive landscape for coffee, lunch trade, and takeaway spending.
For each competitor, you will provide structured analysis covering:
• Business overview and target demographic
• Menu offering and positioning
• Pricing benchmarks (food and hot drinks)
• Deals, loyalty schemes, and promotions
• Digital presence and marketing strength
• Delivery platform presence
• Customer review themes
• Location strength and footfall indicators
You will also conduct wider area research covering:
• Demographics and tourism impact
• Student influence
• Seasonal demand fluctuations
• Coffee culture and healthy eating trends
• Market gap identification
The objective is to clearly determine whether there is an opportunity for a healthy, modern fast-casual concept in this location.
2. National Concept Benchmarking (UK-Wide)
Because no local business directly matches our concept, we also require benchmarking against UK businesses that operate similar models (e.g., The Salad Project, Tossed, Atis, Farmer J, Urban Greens, and other comparable brands).
For each national comparator, you will analyse:
• Business model and pricing structure
• Brand positioning and demographic targeting
• Menu strategy and upselling
• Customer acquisition and retention methods
• Operational model insights
• Adaptability to a smaller town market
You will then provide a commercial comparison between these urban models and the Menai Bridge market, including pricing adjustments and risk considerations.
Deliverables
We require:
• A detailed written report
• Competitor comparison tables
• Pricing comparison tables
• Customer enticement comparison matrix
• Market gap summary
• SWOT analysis for the proposed concept
• Viability conclusion and positioning recommendation
All analysis must be evidence-based, with supporting links or screenshots where relevant.
Core Objective
To determine:
• Whether a modern salad bar + coffee concept can succeed in Menai Bridge
• What price point would work
• Whether the market is tourist-driven or local-driven
• What clear differentiation strategy is required
• Whether there is sufficient year-round demand
We are looking for a commercially minded researcher who can go beyond surface-level observations and provide strategic insight.
We are looking for a commercially minded researcher with experience in:
• UK hospitality market research
