Overview
Performs a variety of duties related to planning, estimating, scheduling, and field coordination of construction activities.
What You Will Be Doing
Prepare detailed cost estimates by reviewing engineering specifications and contract conditions; research, analyze, and recommend best methods and procedures to minimize labour, equipment requirements, associated costs, and scheduling impacts; revise estimates and schedules as required.
Prepare quantity takeoffs for a wide range of materials and components; calculate direct material and component costs using established unit costs and productivity rates or base information; assess risks and incorporate them into the estimating and pricing process.
Apply established markups to direct cost components to ensure recovery of full overhead expenses.
Prepare work schedules and coordinate activities on assigned projects. May design drawings, perform drafting and site surveys, and operate electrical testing equipment to prepare detailed technical reports; maintain project progress data (graphs, charts, etc.); advise managers when discrepancies or changes to work plans are required.
Compile schedules of pay items for estimates, bid submissions, and subcontract tender documents; prepare comparative summaries of quantity and cost calculations for bid analysis; verify quantity calculations to ensure accuracy.
Obtain technical information and pricing from suppliers; review drawings, specifications, and material lists; prepare procurement documentation for construction materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
Maintain up-to-date records of equipment costs, production rates, and material costs related to construction projects.
Review cost and progress reports to compare projected costs with estimated costs; assess impacts of scheduling changes on project costs.
Provide technical advice and coordination to field crews and internal/external stakeholders; participate as a member of construction project teams as required.
Perform related duties of a minor nature as required.
What You Need to Have
Excellent knowledge of Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical disciplines, with working knowledge of at least one additional discipline.
Strong knowledge of applicable standards and codes.
Extensive construction knowledge of generation, substation, transmission, and distribution facilities and related equipment.
Ability to provide technical direction and work coordination to construction trades.
Working knowledge of project management principles.
Understanding of accounting processes and ability to discuss financial aspects of projects with technical staff.
Ability to assist in preparing contracts and requests for proposals.
Strong computer skills related to design, construction estimating, scheduling, costing, and project management systems.
Basic drafting and design skills.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess cost and schedule reports and recommend corrective action.
Excellent estimating and scheduling skills.
Strong project team participation and leadership abilities.
Good interpersonal, written communication, and negotiation skills.
Ability to read and prepare non-routine technical reports.
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Diploma of Technology or Degree in a construction-related field (Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business Administration, Quantity Surveying, etc.) or a related trades qualification (e.g., Electrician, Power Line Technician, Millwright, General Trades).
Minimum five (5) years of experience in construction and/or project management.
