In partnership with Metrolinx, ACCIONA is playing a key role in the design and construction of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE), a 9.2-kilometre westward addition to Toronto's Line 5 light rail transit network. This major infrastructure project includes seven new stations and installation of rail and systems under a progressive design-build model.
Beyond its technical scope, the ECWE project represents a significant investment in sustainable urban mobility, expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5,800 tonnes annually and eliminate over 6.5 million vehicle trips each year when combined with the full Line 5.

Job Description

The Tunnel Fit-out Technical Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the planning, coordination, and delivery of all technical aspects related to tunnel fit-out systems within the ECWE-SRS project. This includes ensuring that mechanical, electrical, civil, architectural, and safety-critical tunnel systems are designed, installed, tested, and commissioned in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

The role acts as a bridge between engineering, construction, design consultants, subcontractors, and project management teams to ensure seamless integration of all tunnel fit-out disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Coordination

  • Coordinate all engineering and design information required for tunnel fit-out works (MEP, ventilation, drainage,

  • fire safety, cable management, walkways, architectural finishes, etc.).

  • Review and interpret technical drawings, specifications, IFC packages, method statements, and material

  • submittals.

  • Identify design gaps and interface issues; drive timely resolution with designers and relevant stakeholders.

  • Ensure integration of all tunnel systems with the broader rail network and surface structures.

Construction Support

  • Provide technical support to tunnel fit-out construction teams during installation stages.

  • Monitor construction progress to ensure compliance with design requirements and quality standards.

  • Participate in tunnel inspections, site walks, and technical clarifications during ongoing works.

  • Work with interface teams to coordinate works in shafts, cross-passages, and adits.

Interface & Stakeholder Management

  • Liaise with design consultants, subcontractors, and system-wide engineering teams.

  • Support interface coordination between mechanical, electrical, telecoms, ventilation, fire/life safety, and civil

  • packages.

  • Coordinate with procurement and logistics teams to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation, including design changes, RFIs, NCRs, and technical registers.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, railway operator requirements, and tunnel safety regulations.

  • Assist in the development and review of installation plans, test procedures, commissioning documentation, and

  • O\&M manuals.

Testing & Commissioning Support

  • Support the testing and commissioning team in planning, technical validation, and system integration activities.

  • Participate in tunnel readiness reviews, safety checks, and acceptance processes.

  • Ensure all systems are compliant with safety-critical requirements (fire and life safety, ventilation performance,

  • emergency systems).

Other

  • Other duties as related to the role

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Degree or diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Fire Safety, or related fields).

  • Experience in large-scale rail, metro, or tunnelling projects.

  • Strong understanding of tunnel systems: ventilation, drainage, fire/life safety, MEP installations, cable management, etc.

  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Excellent coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge of rail standards, NFPA/BS codes, tunnel safety regulations, and system integration.

  • Experience with underground construction environments (TBM, drill-and-blast, mined tunnels).

  • Familiarity with BIM and digital engineering tools (Navisworks, Revit, CAD).

  • Safety certifications (e.g., confined space training, CSCS, rail safety passport).

This role offers an annual base salary in the anticipated range of $90,000–$120,000 CAD, with compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity.

In addition to base salary, this role includes a total rewards package that supports employee well-being, development, and long-term growth, subject to company policies and applicable provincial employment standards, including:
