The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural is seeking a well-rounded Hydrogeologist with experience working in Alberta's Oil Sands industry to help meet the needs of our Thermal Oil Sands assets.  In this full-time position, working with a senior asset Hydrogeologist and a multidisciplinary team, you will utilize your strong technical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in the development and monitoring of groundwater source and disposal systems. You will also be responsible for ensuring asset groundwater regulatory compliance and work on regulatory applications.

  • Shift schedule: 5 x 2, 8-hour shifts

Key Accountabilities:

  • Groundwater source and disposal system management and development, including source and disposal well drilling
  • Regional aquifer pressure monitoring
  • Directing groundwater flow numerical modelling studies
  • Mannville and Neogene/Quaternary aquifer mapping 
  • Regulatory management, including managing Water Act licenses and meeting AER Directive and EPEA approval requirements
  • Coordinating consultants on regulatory monitoring and reporting programs
  • Project management, data compilation, assessment, and reporting.

What You Bring to the Role:

  • M.Sc. in Hydrogeology or B.Sc. degree in Geology with specialization in Hydrogeology 
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA within 12 months of hiring 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Oil Sands hydrogeological work, including experience in conducting field investigations and experience in the management of regional groundwater monitoring networks. 
  • Understanding of the regional Southern Athabasca Oil Sands Area groundwater flow systems would be considered an asset 
  • Mannville Mapping Experience 
  • Aquifer pressure transient analysis experience
  • Project management ability and experience
  • Experience in groundwater flow modeling studies (FEFLOW and MODFLOW) would be an asset
