Summary

As a key member of GFL's HAZMAT Emergency Response Team, the HAZMAT Technician will provide a high level of technical expertise to emergency activations involving dangerous goods. The Technician will supplement our current team to ensure immediate response is provided at the time of activation. The person will be able to complete responses in an efficient manner while upholding GFL's high standards of safety and quality of service. The position requires exceptional skills in safety, planning, communication, organization, and time management.

The regular work schedule is an 8-hour day, Monday through Friday. However, the successful candidate must be available to fulfill on-call requirements, and respond to emergencies outside of the regular workday.

The position is based in Edmonton, AB but the Hazmat ER team is expected to travel throughout the Province of Alberta as required. Out of Province travel may occur from time to time but is considered minimal.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond at a moment's notice to HAZMAT Emergency Responses including responding to rail, road, and fixed facilities.

  • Perform chemical transloading from one means of containment to another. This may include tank cars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, or other small means of containment.

  • Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.

  • Fully engaged as an entrant, man watch, or rescue attendant for Confined Space Entry projects inclusive of tank cleanings.

  • Assist with organizing all resources required in both a response situation and in preparation for a potential response situation, including personnel, equipment, and documentation.

  • Involvement with environmental projects and assisting as required.

  • Ensure all emergency response equipment is operationally ready including preparation, equipment decontamination, and servicing of ER equipment as outlined and required.

  • Ensure all relevant information and documentation is gathered and maintained when providing emergency services.

  • Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including following GFL procedures, completing safety documentation, and upholding GFL's high level of safety.

  • Participate in live training events.

  • Willing to participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to be flexible and fulfill the on-call and travel requirements of this position.

  • A Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving abstract is required; Valid Class 5Q driver's license would be highly desirable.

  • Experience in handling and/or transporting hazardous materials or emergency response would be an asset.

  • Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection from time to time as required. This will require the Hazmat Technician to be clean shaven.

  • Ability to work out of town from time to time as needed.

  • Any prior training or experience relating to the following would be an asset: HAZMAT Technician, Tank car Specialist, Tank truck Specialist, ICS, Confined Space Entry, etc. Please note extensive training will be provided by GFL to the successful candidate.
