The Role
We are seeking a Manufacturing Applications Design Engineer to join our core engineering team at our Alton HQ. This pivotal role involves working closely with fabricators, assembly teams, and test engineers to design robust, manufacturable solutions for heavy-duty equipment. This is not a remote or desk-only CAD role; you will be hands-on and regularly present on the shop floor, responsible for seeing designs through from concept to production. Candidates must be located within a commutable distance to Alton, Hampshire, whilst possessing Siemens NX and UK-based engineering experience, both of which are esseential
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop machinery and equipment using Siemens NX, managing engineering data within Teamcenter Produce fully manufacturable, cost-effective designs, with a strong emphasis on sheet metal fabrication Collaborate closely with fabricators, welders, and assembly teams to resolve manufacturing and build challenges Provide regular, hands-on production support to ensure design intent is realised on the shop floor Assist with load, functional, and cycle testing alongside the Technical Development & Test Manager Generate clear technical drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and supporting documentation Contribute to continuous improvement, design optimisation, and problem-solving across the product range Serve as a key engineering interface between design, manufacturing, and testing departments
Essential Skills & Experience
Proven commercial experience using Siemens NX (non-negotiable) Mechanical engineering experience within UK manufacturing or heavy industry Degree-qualified (BEng or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering from a UK or European university Minimum of 3 years’ experience in mechanical design for manufactured products Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication, welding, and production processes Confident working directly with production teams and fabricators Practical, solutions-focused mindset with strong ownership of work Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines
Role Requirements
Full-time, office-based role at Alton HQ (GU34) Regular travel to a nearby production facility (RG29) Hands-on, manufacturing-facing engineering position Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle
Desirable (Not Essential)
Experience designing heavy-duty, construction, or lifting equipment Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations Background in applications or manufacturing-led design roles
