Job Description

MISSION

Reporting to the Director, Finance & Accounting, the Senior Financial & Internal Audit Analyst is responsible for assessing the design and effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting, as well as supporting an ongoing assessment of risk with a continuous improvement mindset. Additionally, this role will perform annual audit procedures over the Indigo Books & Music Impact Report.

On a periodic basis, this role will further provide technical support to the core accounting team, such as through the preparation of discrete accounting journal entries and financial reporting where an effective segregation of duties can be maintained.

KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS

  • Timely completion of internal audit procedures throughout the year, with a particular focus on internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) and the sustainability Impact Report that the organization publishes annually
  • Effective reporting of audit findings and development of actionable recommendations
  • Meet all applicable financial reporting deadlines while keeping quality top of mind to facilitate an effective period end close
  • Provide timely response and feedback to internal queries for information and/or assistance
  • Strong communication skills to enable effective collaboration with cross functional partners and maintain a high-quality audit trail

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Functional

Internal Audit

  • Participate in the risk assessment process and development of continuous auditing cycle
  • Perform detailed audit procedures, including: conducting interviews; observing operations; reviewing transactions, documentation, and records; analyzing and explaining unusual variances and trends; assessing compliance with organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Observe and understand business processes to ensure that they are documented completely and accurately by process owners and to ensure that relevant controls are adequately designed to mitigate risks
  • Liaise and interact with various business stakeholders across the organization and seek opportunities for operational improvement and efficiency, including through ad hoc operational audits
  • Summarize and report on audit findings, providing actionable recommendations and suggestions to improve and remediate deficiencies
  • Oversee access rights as well as ongoing training and guidance on the AuditBoard system as new users are added over time
  • Assist external auditors with their fieldwork, where appropriate
  • Assist with certain government compliance filings

Financial Reporting

  • Maintain and prepare certain monthly journal entries; conduct regular reviews of related accounts and conduct structured analyses of data for consolidated results
  • Produce and create reports from the accounting system, adhering to processes to ensure accuracy and completeness of records
  • Participate in financial analysis and discussion of results on a monthly basis
  • Provide input in the development of the annual budget
  • Prepare the monthly financial statements for the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, as well as associated charitable tax filings
  • Engage and assist with the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation's external audit by ensuring proper support documents are gathered and provided in a timely manner
  • Challenge the status quo by participating in financial system continuous improvement projects, including the streamlining of business processes and new IT system upgrades or implementations
  • Act as an advocate for the customer by placing their expectations and needs at the forefront of all design and decision-making processes
  • Ad hoc requests and projects, as assigned

Qualifications

Work Experience / Education / Certifications

  • University degree in Finance, Business or Accounting
  • Professional accounting or auditing designation (such as CPA, CIA) or close to obtaining one
  • 3+ years of experience in internal or external audit roles

Competencies / Skills / Attributes

  • Working understanding of IFRS and ASNPO reporting frameworks
  • Willingness to take ownership of projects, enabled by strong organizational skills and diligent follow-up on action items
  • Ability to prioritize workload and multi-task to complete projects on time
  • Effective problem solving and decision-making skills, including an ability to interpret when a problem could exist based on quantitative and/or qualitative indicators
  • Ongoing pursuit of thought leadership with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including with respect to developing and delivering presentations and reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with sustainability and ESG reporting frameworks, SAP, and/or audit management software is considered an asset
